WE had a customer with a similar fault on his mondeo 2004 MY.
But every time he left the car with us for a few hours we couldn't make it do it, nor find anything wrong. So we'd give it him back. Next day he'd be on the phone with the same noise from the steering coloum. Again he left it with us and again we found nowt.
After several visits to us it turned out to be his sodding keyring getting caught in the gap behind the steering wheel...0
