Laundering salwaar kameez-any Asian ladies out there?

Being a larger lady I really like the salwaar kameez for special occasions like a wedding as I find them very graceful. Three years ago I bought two but they were dry clean only and it cost a fortune; three dry cleans and it cost me almost as much as the outfit.

This summer I bought another one for two weddings. It needed cleaning so I thought I would try it on a delicate cool wash cycle. Big mistake. The tunic part (kameez I think?) is two layers, a black basic layer with the beaded top layer. It has now shrunk.
Grr... Fortunately this was after the weddings!

My question is - if there are any Asian ladies reading this - when these outfits need laundering, how do you manage, especially if you wear them a lot? You obviously mustn't be chucking them in the washing machine! I live in northwest London and see many Asian ladies wearing them and often wonder how they manage with this, especially they are wearing them all day and have to cook and clean and so on. I'm used to things that you can chuck in the machine, although I do like to wear an apron as I always drop and splash things on myself!

I bought it on the Ealing Road in Wembley but would only go back there if I needed to buy another one, and no more weddings coming up!

TIA-Louise

  • Why don't you ask in the shop you purchased it from? Alternatively, how about trying dry cleaning sheets that go in the tumble dryer?

I googled and found this page which has some washing instructions, also came across an instruction to handwash in cold water.

Found this page too - go to bottom of page for washing instructions.

Thanks so much. Wish I had looked before washing! Going to try and very carefully steam the top with my steam generator and see if I can stretch it out a bit. I still think these ladies must have it tough with their laundry though. And today I saw an Asian gentleman with two pretty little daughters who were both wearing the most gorgeous beaded salwaar kameez. On kids - and we know how they are with clothes and washing!
