Potterton Suprima HE 50 Boiler - ANY ADVICE PLEASE!?!

I have a Potterton Suprima HE 50 Boiler, and it has stopped igniting. You can hear it starting up and the clicking but nothing happens, eventually after a few goes the red fault light comes on.

I called Potterton and they said they can send someone for a one off payment of £299 and this price will include all work and parts.

Thinking this was a bit expensive and having no idea yet what the problem was, I called in the company who have serviced the boiler previously.

The problem is the gas valve and they have quoted me £310 for parts and fitting - is this a reasonable price??

Also I have searched on the internet and found what I think is the right part for £83(inc VAT) - Is the gas Valve something you can fit yourself?? will the part I have seen on the internet be what I need??

I would appreciate any advice on this matter as at the moment im not sure I can afford to part with £300!

Thanks.

  • The gas valve on those boilers often needs replacing, as does the PCB.

IIRC can't you pay the 300pound to potterton over 10 months and isn't it also a year coverplan.

Was the clicking sound you heard obviously just the gas not lighting? Or did it sound slightly harsher? Did the company that quoted you 310pound inspect the boiler? Are they certain it's just the valve?

  • Hi,

I think the clicking is just the boiler trying to ignite.

Potterton never mentioned a pay monthly option - I will give them a call.

    Thanks

I find it very hard to believe that someone can ask this question. Does changing a gas valve sound like a DIY job?

This is just sooooo wrong that I don't know where to start.

P.S. The British Gas fixed price repair is cheaper than both your quotes.
  • You cannot change a gas valve yourself it is an irresponsible thing to even comprehend,Why bother to find out how much the part is as it makes no difference.

When I looked into that a while back British Gas seemed to have a very peculiar wording that suggested that it was £150 to fix one fault and if they found more then the price would go up.

Just to join in with the ????????? over fitting a part yourself!!

That's right. So, make sure they fix the expensive problem and not that annoying dripping tap.
  • I would just like to say in my defence of all the comments re: fitting it yourself.
I have NO idea what the Gas valve is and the function of it in the boiler etc, having looked at previous threads on here with Potterton bolier issues many people have fitted themselves PCB's etc (again no idea what this is either) - so I assumed this may also be an option for the gas valve.

So forgive my naivety and thanks for the advice.

The advise would be pay Potterton for thier 12 month cover and then they will fix your boiler for the same money which you then can spread the cost.
Youre not going to get it done any cheaper by shopping around!!

  • I would agree with Sparky (as long as that option still exists). As you will probably find that with potterton boilers it all goes wrong at once. Also they prioritise fixing boilers for people on the plan. They also only seem to come out on saturdays to people on the plan too.....

  • My boiler has the same fault, a plumber has quoted me £270 to replace it including a boiler service. There is a template letter from BBC watchdog you can use to get money back on this but the site no longer seems to show the letter. Does anyone else know where you can find it?
