Potterton Suprima HE 50 Boiler problem - PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a Potterton Suprima HE 50 Boiler, and it has stopped igniting. You can hear it starting up and the clicking but nothing happens, eventually after a few goes the red fault light comes on.

I called Potterton and they said they can send someone for a one off payment of £299 and this price will include all work and parts.

Thinking this was a bit expensive and having no idea yet what the problem was, I called in the company who have serviced the boiler previously.

The problem is the gas valve and they have quoted me £310 for parts and fitting - is this a reasonable price??

Also I have searched on the internet and found what I think is the right part for £83(inc VAT) - Is the gas Valve something you can fit yourself?? will the part I have seen on the internet be what I need??

I would appreciate any advice on this matter as at the moment im not sure I can afford to part with £300!

Thanks.

british gas will do it for a fixed price of around 160

please do not try and do the gas valve yourself, unless you wish for your house to be a pile of bricks when it expodes!

You need to be CORGI registered to change the Gas valve. There are also some suppliers who will not supply Gas parts unless you give the CORGI registration details. These Boilers qare prone to a lot of problems, sometimes it seems like the Gas valve but then find something else as well. Good Luck.

If you have to ask if you can change a gas valve then you probably shouldn't be doing it, but we all have an obligation to comply with the law.

CORGI was set up to regulate the industry and has nothing to do with the private individual. Everyone must comply with the gas safety regulations (installation and use 1998). This states that everyone who works with gas must be competent to do so; there is no definition of competence. It also states that DIY gaswork "is likely to be dangerous and might be illegal". (I am quoting from memory here).

Therefore gaswork undertaken by the non CORGI registered enthusiast engineer not in the course of business is not illegal. But if you subsequently blow up your house and that of you neighbours, your insurance will not cover you as you have shown that you are not competent.
