Cheque in Joint Names for Single Account - HELP!!!

Options
Hi everyone,

I got married recently and hubby and I don't really want a joint account. In the meantime we have received some cheques as wedding gifts to 'Mr and Mrs X' however when hubby tried to pay these into his account he holds with Lloyds TSB they refused to accept them based on the fact his account is not in our joint names. I have been told that HSBC who I bank with are more lenient but can't get to them in the day and ANNOYINGLY can't get any sense out of the call centres I keep getting through to. So....if I go and pay this cheque in at a deposit point on a sunday (the only day I can get to my branch) what do I need to do? Does my husband have to sign the back of the cheques or something?

Many thanks in advance for any help! xxx

No - they need to be paid into a joint account or sent back to the drawer to be made out in one of your names. For a bank to clear the cheques into a single named account, then they would effectively be commiting fraudulent conversion.

Sorry that's probably not the answer you want, but you won't cash these otherwise.

  • Why not open a joint account separate from your existing accounts, pay these cheques in, wait for them to clear, each withdraw your share, then close the account. It could be a savings account, as long as it accepts deposits by cheque.

If you really, really don't want to go down this route (perhaps because you want to avoid any financial association on your credit records?) then all I can think of is to try one of the cheque cashing places like those below. They'll charge you a (hefty) fee, but at least you'll get some of the money.

Obviously HSBC are very specific about their cheques. My husband banks with NatWest and cheques written in our joint names have never been returned...
We also banked cheques in Mr&Mrs name to our joint account where my name hasn't been updated (took me ages to change all the paperwork into my new surname).
