Where to upload pics whilst travelling?

Options
I'm going round North America for a year and don't trust myself not to lose my camera or the memory card to corrupt on me over such a long time away. Since I'll probably have pretty regular internet access, I can upload my pics as I go along. But where is the best place?

Flikr looks like a good option but in order to download your original high resolution pictures later you need to pay an annual fee of $25. Is there a cheaper/better service out there?

  • Tesco photo online is free and easy to use, so is snapfish, and probably many others.

I have spent the last 3 months working/travelling in US and I uploaded my pics to tesco photo online then I would send the link to the album to my brother who would back up all the pics to CD for me just in case.

Are you taking a laptop? If not then I assume you'll be using internet cafes and such to upload. Just a word of warning, if you are staying in hostels I found that all the ones I stayed in only had one PC with a USB port out the however many they had for internet access, and that was usually the busiest! If you have a laptop with wifi enabled then you'll obviously be in a better position!

Another option is to have them put to CD whilst you're there and either keep with you or post back home. My friend did this, think Walgreens (like Superdrug) do CD for just $2.99.

    Have a fun trip

  • Why not get a gmail account and just email them to yourself in < 10mb blocks? (Assuming 10Mb is still their attachment size limit.. it might be bigger now.)

Or Gdrive, if you're taking a lappy with you:

SmugMug costs US$39/year, with an extra $5 off via a referral which I'd be happy to give you ;)

SmugMug gives completely unlimited storage of photos up to 12 megapixels. No limits at all on how many photos or how much data you upload and download. You have full control over your photo galleries so you can make them visible to the public or private, visible or not to Google etc. There are a number of extension tools available to smugmug to allow you to migrate pics, do bulk upload/download, interface into photo tools on your PC/Mac etc.

I have a personal account, but I also have a second SmugMug account, which was offered by SmugMug completely free of charge to my blood bike charity. Feel free to take a look at our blood bike piccies to get a feel for the service. IMHO it is much much better than any of the other paid-for services.

Surely if the op was taking a laptop with him then he would store the photo's on there and also be able to create backup CD's.

Or is that just me thinking too logically
  • I don't have a laptop so it's just going to be wherever I can find a USB port I think!

I thought about gmail but at over a meg per picture it's just going to be too fiddly and take too long to send a lot of pics.

Tesco looked promising until I made an account and realised you can't download your pictures in their original resolution - it's even smaller than facebook!

So SmugMug. It looks very sleek and professional, but how is it better than Flikr? I think Flikr has all the features you mentioned, plus a larger and more vibrant online community, for a cheaper price. Am I missing something? I'd gladly take you up on the offer of that referral, if I was convinved it's worth the extra $10!

Try it for free for a month. One money saving ruse is to sign up for the 14 day free trial before you go on holiday, use it while you are away then cancel the trial. There is nothing at all to stop you doing this as the trial gives you access to all the features of the service.

If you do sign up for the trial use my referral code cCodYhr64I05I to save the $5 if you later convert to a paid-for account.

Any questions, just ask. I love the site, the speed, the features etc and have just paid for my first year's renewal - an acid test for any subscription service!
  • Why not get your own domain name a web hosting package and install a gallery system such as coppermine. Its quicker and easier to setup than you would think. It may cost a little more than using someone elses photo service but at least you would be in complete control of your images.

Flickr is great; I've been a user for a few years now, and I upgraded to a Pro account about 6 months ago. $24.99 a year (about £14) is nothing really, and until the 30th September, they're offering an extra 3 months free when you purchase a Pro account. So if you get your skates on, it'll work out at less than £1 a month.

You can upload an unlimited number of photos, which can be up to 20 MB each in size, and it has a really good community. There are loads of groups to join, which make it great for getting constructive advice and encouragement.
  • I did think about my own domain, but like you say it is expensive and I was also concerned about how difficult uploading might be from different places as I've only done it using special ftp software in the past. Plus I have no idea how to build websites and stuff.

I've had a play with Google photos and it's pretty impressive in terms of interface, downloading full res pics for free and only $20/year for 10gb of space (not unlimited but more than enough for me). Only problem is that web-based uploading is slow and you can only do 5 pics at a time. The Picasa software is great but I'm guessing most lan cafes don't let you install whatever software you feel like, plus the extra time of doing this every time I log on a different computer.

So I think Flikr looks like the best option for me. I'll think on it and probably sign up after work to take advantage of that offer (which I failed to spot in my research!)

    Thanks all.
