High gas bill all of a sudden !!!

Options
My mother-in-law who lives on here and has no central heating (just a gas fire she rarely turns on !!!). She also has a gas cooker.

Anyway, for years her gas bills every quarter has been between £20 and £50 (in the winter). Suddenly, this quarter its £250 (and thats over the summer!).

At first, I thought it was because maybe she'd been having underestimated bills, but the meter was read in March and just recently in September (and the reading is correct).

Is there any chance her meter could be screwed or something? It seems like a huge leap in usage for no reason?

Comments

  • Check the meter isn't increasing whilst everything is turned off. Then take daily readings.

Has she had a meter change recently? If she has it would have changed to a metric meter and if she previously had an imperial meter the energy company may not have updated their records.

    Gas leak?
Is it only the fire and cooker that's gas?

Good point. I'll see if the meter moves when everything is off.

    No meter change recently.

I guess it could be a leak although theres no smell at all.

Yes, only cooker and gas fire.

If it is a leak, do the utility companies make you pay for all the gas you've wasted ?
  • Uh I seriously hope not! The least of their worries, if there is a gas leak, would be the money. If you aren't at work I would seriously advise you to go down there now and check if the meter is moving with nothing on.

Any leak after the meter is your responsibility so yes you have to pay.
