Mazda 626 remote key fob
Disaster with the key fob (for the alarm and central locking) for my Mazda 626 (1997, 1992-1997 shape) - it fell out of my pocket when out for a walk! I have a spare, but is it possible to get a replacement for less than the high dealer price?
I have seen some generics advertised on line - anyone tried one?
Is it possible to buy a replacement and program it myself?
Thanks!

with some makes of car you can buy a used one from ebay and then get it recoded at a decent locksmiths
I would find a relevant car forum and ask on there0 -
- Open driver's door and leave open.
- Insert the key into the switch and turn to ON and OFF position three times. Note: turn to the ON and not the ACC position!
- Take key out of the ignition.
- Press the driver's door ajar push-button three times. This button is located on the center pillar between the driver's door and the rear door. It is on the bottom part of the pillar and is pointing out.
- Press any button on the first remote. After several seconds, the dashboard buzzer will beep.
- Repeat step #5 for all the other remotes.
- When you are done, shut the door. The car will beep several times.
- You are done. Test all remotes to make sure they work!

that wont do the immobiliser (if theres one fitted)0 -
I bought a secondhand one on eBay for about £20 and followed the above instructions (or similar ones, anyway) to program our MX5 to recognise it.
When we sold the MX5 I gave it to a colleague who programmed his Demio to the same fob.
However on the MX5 forum I got the instructions from there were reports that only the right type of fob would work for each model. Does your fob have a number on the back?.0 -

Mazdas of this era have a separate fob for door locks and alarm, as well as the key itself, which presumably incorporates the immobiliser chip..0 -
Wow - thanks for all the great advice!
I have been investigating the fob further and my local Mazda dealer assures me that the alarm can't have been factory fitted since they didn't do them at that stage. I always assumed it was a factory fit (it matches the fob on my mother's MX5) - hence some confusion. Sorry to get that wrong!
Anyway, it turns out that this is a Cobra alarm. Not sure of the model yet (I have to pick the car up from Taunton on Friday, where I abandoned it after losing the fob...) and it isn't on the spare fob anywhere. No idea if this makes is easier or harder to fix.
Thanks again!0
