Loft Insulation advice please

Had a look in the loft today, approximately two thirds of it is insulated in that yellow itchy stuff and it appears to be around 3 inches thick. I had a couple of tanks and a load of pipework removed a while ago and it has left a few big areas that have no insulation.
I want to obviously insulate these areas but I also think it might be wise to add more insulation to the rest of the loft.
Can anyone suggest how thick the insulation should be, and perhaps where the best place to buy it might be? I would probably end up at B&Q or Wickes but I always get the feeling I am paying too much for an inferior product in those stores.
Thanks in advance

200mm is the advice these days.
i use wickes for nearly all my building products/projects.Get some gorm.0 -
Current recommendations are a huge 270mm deep of insulation i believe ..so you need to top up with[STRIKE] 100mm[/STRIKE] 200mm thick insulation to reach that and it will go well beyond the level of the timbers.
Not sure on the best place for buying insulation. I'd probably be tempted to goto Wickes to be honest as i prefer their customer service to B&Q and generally i find their products better. Looking here http://www.wickes.co.uk/Loft-Insulation/Loft-Insulation/icat/liloftrollinsul it's "buy one get one free" on the standard sort from wickes. Might get some myself!

Just came across this at screwfix: http://www.screwfix.com/prods/92627/Building/Roofing-Insulation/Non-Itch-Loft-Insulation-150mm-x-8-10m#
...made out of recycled plastic bottles - pricey but an interesting use of plastic bottles!
