Oh, forgot to say - if you ever see Staffordshire oatcakes in the supermarket, my advice is to avoid them like the plague. They're a very poor cousin of the fresh oatcakes we get locally, and I wouldn't give them to my dog (if I had one!!)

Just my own personal opinion of course....

DH is just cooking up a batch now - I'll try and post a piccy later.

  • They look nice. Are they the same as the oatcakes you get in Ashbourne? I love those with a duck fried duck egg on top.

Just had an email back from Mornflake. I asked them about the difference between oats and oatmeal:

    Dear Soba
    Thank you for your e-mail.
I have spoken with our Technical Manager and he tells me that the texture of the oatcake would be different if you used porridge oats in the recipe. They have tried many variations in tests and have found that the medium oatmeal gives the best results.
We do have 25kg sacks of Medium Oatmeal available from our shop on site. The current price is £11.40.
I hope this answers your questions but please do not hesitate to contact me again if you need any further information.

Where it says shop on site, do they mean website, or do they have a shop at their factory site that you can go in and buy from?

Oatmeal is much finer so is suitable for parkin and the Staffordshire pancakes. I noticed that M @ S sell it now so is worth a look just to compare the difference.
oatmeal comes in at least 3 grades ranging from fine through medium to pinhead (coarse) so you need to check the pack to make sure you have the kind you need for a particular purpose

I believe they're similar, but I think the Derbyshire oatcakes are thicker than Staffordshire ones.

I took it to mean an on-site shop. They're located in Crewe, Cheshire I believe. You can also order from their website, but the delivery charges are a little prohibitive:eek:

if you want to buy oats/oatmeal or porridge oats on bulk, would your local health food shop order them in for you? mine will get in larger packs of anything in their catalogues if asked & there's no delivery to pay because it comes in with their regular order

just to add to the confusion, I'm a total porridge freak (a rare breed even here in Scotland) but I never make mine with porridge oats, they're far too gluey, always a mixture of medium & pinhead oatmeal

those Stafforshire oatcakes look lovely, I'm going to have a go at making some :)

  • Hi all,

I have used the search, but couldn't find the naswer to my question. Soooo....

If I need oatmeal for a recipe, but only have porridge oats, can I use oats, or do I have to blitz them in the food processor first?

    Thanks!

    T xx
