I'm spending money like there's tomorrow at the moment...
I need carpet advice...lots of you have had carpet fitted so someone must be able to help...
We got a quote today (I've not been home yet to see the carpet and see what quality it is) for £1400 for 3 bedrooms, stairs and landing, and largish (21 x 12 foot) living room. When we went to allied carpets (do not fear - it was more to get a clue than to buy from them), they estimated we needed 85 square meters of carpet.
To me the above quote sounds OK. It's supposedly had VAT knocked off the price of the carpet. The man has fitted our inlaws dining room and their friends house.
Any opinions? Any questions I should be asking the man?0 -
Hi Everyone,
Sorry I havent updated my blog yet, Im going to do it tonight!
Helping_Hubby - Were doing the same at the minute! Also went to Allied and got a quote for £1600 for 3 bedrooms, landing and stairs which I thought was A LOT ! That also didnt include underlay! I found the sales man obnoxious and im not sad they are going into administration!
Yesterday we went to a little shop and picked almost the same type of carpets and got a quote for £938 all included (fitting, underlay, grippers etc) It was a much nicer experience and no pressure selling, just good advice!
We are looking for approx 35m2 but it will be more due to wastage. The landing carpet is 100% wool at £38.99/m2 but it is made to fit so no wastage and the bedroom carpet was synthetic and £11.99/m2. I think he quoted £15 for all the grippers and £4.80/m2 for treadair underlay.
Im going to look round a few more local shops before we decide!
That price doesnt seem too bad, does it include fitting and underlay, grippers etc?

You really need to know the quality and brand of carpets - my parents paid that much for 2 rooms worth of carpet but then it is very good carpet !
Being far poorer than my parents we paid about £200 for a 4mx3.8m carpet (no underlay or fitting) said to be hard wearing bedroom type - obv not in the same league as my parents but seems pretty good so far !0 -
Thank you Lisa and Shimmy.
Well I got home and me and OH had an argument. He loves one of the carpets and I'm umming and erring. It's the woven style, and I'm not sure I love it. But can see that it might be better for hiding dirt/stains a little more than a plain plain carpet?
We've agreed to go to the place tomorrow and ask all my questions (what underlay is it, what is the carpet made of, make sure they do silver door bars etc etc). Also we can look at the wider range of carpets. It's actually a place that does end of line stock...so cheaper prices supposedly. But I want to find out exactly what carpet I'm buying.
The £1438 includes carpet at £10ish per sq meter. £791
underlay at £5ish a sq meter. £360
6 door bars £42
Grippers £75
Fitting £170

Ooo I'm glad you mentioned door bars, I'd forgotten about them!
TomsMom & ukmaggie45 - On the subject of veggies I'm doing fairly well! Managed to harvest my first crop of spuds, I forgot to weigh them though! They were very yummy! Also petit pois, purple broccoli and cabbages and a bit of lettuce. The tomatoes are quite small but very very sweet! I think they will all do better next year in a proper vegetable patch and not tubs!
new2investing - Im not sure its really the best time to be going into property to make a profit. Not just yet anyway! You might be better buying a rental in a student town as there will always be paying students!
If you are thinking of living in a property while you do that much work I would think again! The mess is unbelievable! We have stayed renting while the work has been done! I think we would have divorced otherwise! Take a look at all our blogs to see what it entails!
Good luck in whatever you decide to do though!
On the subject of blogs... I've updated mine! Kitchen pictures and all!0 -

Underlay, door bars and grippers are expensive. You can get your underlay much cheaper than that online. We got our from here for £2.63 per sq.m. Cloud 9 Cirrus, good stuff. That price is when you buy it per 15 sq.m. roll. We needed 5 rolls for 2 bedrooms, lounge, dining area and hall/stairs/landing so. There is a delivery charge but for us it worked out the cheapest place. You could check out other online stores but we were very happy with the service we had from them. Also take a look at their grippers, most of them come in at less than £20 ex VAT for 500 ft. Door strips £1.99 each ex VAT.
No, I don't work for them :rotfl: . Just don't get ripped off HH. You can buy your carpet from the store and supply your own underlay etc. If you can't get a recommendation for a fitter you could use theirs. We got a recommendation for a fitter and he is absolutely brilliant. We only got the carpet from our local shop and he did us a good price as he knew we compare prices.
Not sure what you mean by woven style (it's late, I might be being thick here!). If you like plain carpet, you can go for a heather type with flecks of colour in like this one (Queensbury shows the fleck up well). This is the one we had and we paid £16 per sq.m. for the 50oz. You should be able to find a lot of heather types.0 -
On the subject of blogs... I've updated mine! Kitchen pictures and all!
Your kitchen is lovely Lisa. Love the way you've done the sides of the unit to match the worktop and I love, love, love your red wall!
We didn't get as much as 4.5lbs of spuds from the other four bags, they all yielded varying amounts but as we'd dipped into three of them already I'm guessing that there were at least 3lb in each bag altogether, possibly quite a bit more in some.
We had our first dwarf runner beans tonight along with some carrots which are now a very decent size, and even though the leeks are very small (spring onion size) I still used them. My tomato plant has plenty of toms on it but still small and green, the peppers are still green too but looking good.0 -
Nice kitchen...very modern and clean looking with lots of storage and looks like good use of the space!
Any kitchen containing Stella and cookies (even if already raided!) gets my vote lolI like the red colour too (what colour is it - not sure if you already told us somewhere!) and might have been tempted to paint all the walls with it.
We've got the door people coming back on wednesday as the front door needs adjustment. Last Friday we could barely get in as it required two hands pushing down hard to release the catches. It's not so bad after i made some adjustments but it seems to have dropped and I think it's related to temperature. Anyway i'm not certain how to fix it so i'll let them do it and take note what they do for next time it goes wrong as it's bound to happen again!

Thanks TomsMom & andrew-b!
I really love it! It's really only a small kitchen so I tried to fit in as much storage as possible! I heard drawers were better as you can pull them out and easily see what you've put in there!
I did think about painting it all red but I didn't think the room was big enough to take it, I didn't want it to look small! I think the red was called crimson kiss from crown! I'll have to check!
The beer and cookies was a must ha ha! Stuart took to drinking the Stella when he'd been sanding the stairs for days and not really getting anywhere ha ha! Cookies were for me!
Just waiting for the carpenter to get back to us with a date he can start on the doorways!
Right must go to work :-(0 -

Ooh, I missed those Andy (I always forget to blow the pictures up). You can have the Stella, bagsy I have the cookies :rotfl: .
P.S. Looks like I'll have to share the cookies with Lisa, ah well, half a packet's better than nothing.
