Jet2 prices going up

We were thinking of flying to Murcia with Jet2 for the half-term week at the end of October. About 3 weeks ago the prices went up to our amazement as we thought they would come down the nearer it got to the time.

Just checked and they've gone up again. Checked the available seats and it's only half-full as it was 3 weeks ago. So they can't sell them at cheapish prices so they put them up twice. Their logic defeats me.

Can anyone explain what's going on and if anyone can tell me a cheap way to get there I would be very much obliged because the prices are always higher for this week. We can only fly on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

You really thought prices went down the nearer to the time it got?

On word mate - gutted - they go up. Substantially in most cases.

Their seating chart will only show those seats which have been paid for. Not all bookings will pay for a seat allocation. So you have no way of knowing how full the flight is.

All low cost carriers increase their pricing structure as the number of sales increases. Occasionally, they will introduce a 'sale' or 'promotion', but the general trend will always be an increase as the flight date gets closer.
  • Some carriers up'd the prices when the likes of XL.com went bust.
The solving of a problem lies in finding the solvers.
  • End of October is also school holidays for a lot of the country.

Ever here about the law of supply and demand - obviously JET2 think they can sell some seats at a higher price than a lot of seats at a lower price AT A POPULAR TRAVEL TIME

What next - discovering that hotel prices don't come down at New Year?

After the demise of XL the prices of all holidays and flights went up as there was suddenly a big demand for holidays and flights, hence you finding the price had increased.

Airlines operate a fluid pricing system, the more demand the higher the price. The cheapest seats for peak teams like school holidays would have been snapped up when the seats went on sale months ago.

You asked what is going on, it's called an airline trying to make money and stay in business, nothing unusual in that.

I'm convinced that Jet2 (and probably other airlines) monitor the traffic through their site and if there is plenty of interest in a route then they up the prices.

Yes, the system is called yield management, and all airlines (plus some hotels and railway companies) use this very sophisticated computer program to match prices to demand:-

Thanks trisontana, I've been trying to tell my mother this for ages...she price checks a Jet2 flight every day and is then surprised when suddenly the price rises by £10 or £20.
