How does this work? do you get 30% off everything i.e PAYG oyster, one day travelcard or do you have to buy weekly or monthly travel?

From previous talk with friends, I think the 30% discount applies only to weekly, monthly and yearly tickets (ie. anything lasting a week or longer).
If you want a discount on PAYG travel, and have a Young Person's Railcard (now called 16-25 Railcard or something), then you could go to your nearest tube station and ask them to put the railcard onto your oyster card. A student oyster card is not required for this. The railcard means that the daily caps for PAYG travel are reduced by 30%, which can make travelling about much cheaper!0 -
The card lasts for up to a bit over a year. It expires in the middle of the following October, and you can get a new year's card from the middle of September. It doesn't automatically renew.
Pay-as-you-go credit can be added to the card, but pay as you go journeys are charged at the normal adult rate (although see above comment by firegalley - I dare say a railcard can be added to a student oyster photocard in the same way as a normal adult card).
When the card expires, it reverts to being a normal adult card, which is why you need to apply for a new one each year.

I just bought my monthly Oyster bus fare at £35. Weekly tickets are £9.10. Not sure if this is "frozen" or going up due to the Oyster fare going up. I hope it stays!0
