Photos won't open

Hi there

Does anyone know why when I double click on photos, they don't open automatically with a photo viewer (Windows Live Photo Gallery)? Although if I go into the program I can open them okay.

Thanks

In all probability something (probably a program you installed recently) has messed up your file associations - that link a given file extension with a program.

You can fix this yourself, but how you do it will no doubt depend on which version of Windows you have.
  • Hi there

Using Xp - Service Pack3. It knows which program to open JPGs with but just doesn't open them when I double click on them.

    Thanks

I'd suggest switching to another association to see if that works, and back again if it does. It could be that the association is pointing to an old non-working installation.

Right click on a picture, choose "Properties", and on the "General" tab it says:
    Opens with: whatever
Click the "Change" button and select "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".
    See if that works.

If so change it to the program you want and try again.

What does happen when you double click?
Everyone needs a volume control -
When you shout every day and make everthing a catastrophe,
no one will hear you when you need to say something really important.
  • Changed it to Windows Picture and Fax and photos opened after doubleclicking. Changed it back to Windows Live Photo Gallery and nothing happens after doubleclicking!!!
  • I am having the same problem too. I have tried right clicking on an image, clicking open with, choosing Windows Live Photo Gallery and making sure "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is ticked. I have also tried changing the file association on the file types tab under tools -> folder options.

To fix the problem, execute the following command (using an administrator account) from the Start, Run dialog:
    regsvr32 "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\PhotoViewerShim.dll"

If your still having problems you could use Fastone Image Viewer (which I much prefer anyways)
