Did you use a credit card to pay for your air tickets? If so, the card company would have some liability.0

Yes I did, but EasyJet have promised to refund the portion of the fare that was unused. I would be very surprised if BarclayCard would stump up for the additional costs incurred in getting home. But I suppose it's worth a try...

be careful with insurance.
My bag went missing and i found out that i was only covered for the outbound trip and not the return trip! I am now paying double what i was paying before but now have good cover.0 -
Hi
You might want to take a look at the Travel Insurance product that Bristol International Airport provide via their website - financial failure of airline/travel provider/accommodation provider is covered as standard in the policy. You can choose single trip or an annual policy so it is flexible too and is competitively priced. It is underwritten by Mondial Assistance. Put in Travel Insurance in search facility.
If you join the airport's Travel Rewards scheme (free), as a member you get 10% off the premium as well www.bristolairport.co.uk0 -
I had a look at a number of policies and most were weak on cover for a failure of a componant of a DIY holiday.
The primary cover is mostly health related.
So a flight delay or cancellation that caused you to miss a cruise would not be covered for example.
Even paying by CC would not help since only the cancelled costs would be recoverable not the knock on costs or losses
Even package deals are not covered by many travel inurance policies that is why CC and bonding are essential.
There is also the problem with annual policies that do not cover booking beyond the end date of the policy and all planned travel must begin and end within the policy dates. so depending on your dates a number of single trip policies may give better cover if you book a long way ahead.
A good tip if you do have to cancell a trip in advance is to try and negotiate with the supplier to offer an alternative trip rather than cancel, especialy if insurance does not cover you, eg illness/death in a near relative from an existing condition.0
