Economy 7 help please!

We have recently moved into a house with economy 7 and night storage heaters. Last night we switched the heaters on to check that they work.We were keeping on eye on the meter while doing this and noticed that both meters were going up during the economy 7 time. I put the washing machine on to make use of the nighttime rates but the daytime meter went up.
I thought the idea of economy 7 was that all electricity used during those 7 hours was at nighttime rates.
Is it right that both nighttime and daytime meters are on at the same time?

  • What time does your Economy 7 period start?
  • We used to have Economy 7 - this ran for a straight 7 hours. When we moved we still had Economy 7 but the hours are split, 2hrs & 5 hrs, check with your company - life is never straightforward !!!!!!!!!!
What goes around comes around !! Simple but very true :rotfl:

Our supplier told us 12:30 - 7:30 but it is 1:30-8:30.
I'm just confused by both readings going up at the same time.
  • Have you checked the time clock if there is one?????
Sounds like it might be set wrong ??

Will probably go back to 12.30-7.30 when the clocks go back.

Both readings going up does sound strange.

OK - may be wrong but I seem to remember that not all houses have 'normal' economy 7 (one charge for day use, one for night). Some have 2 separate meters - one runs 'normal' stuff and is charged at normal day rates. The second runs economy 7 and only comes on at night. This would feed storage heaters. Therefore you can't turn your storage heaters on during the day unless it has a feed from both.

As I say, I may be wrong but I think this was how E7 was set up in my old place in the dim and distant past!

Thanks Plasticman. That sounds like it could be what it is. We need to talk to our supplier again but the helpline is not open on Sunday.

Well looking at the prices our supplier said we are paying we are paying economy 7 prices for day and night rate. I wonder if we can get everything put onto economy 7 if this the case.
