Hi all
I've just experienced the above (and just before FIFA09 comes out!!...aagghh)
Anyway I've searched the net and found that it's not an unknown occurrence. Many pages say "phone sony and they'll replace" but none of them list a phone number.
Besides, i bought it from Amazon so my contract is with them. I've emailed them this morning and found an email address on the playstation store website and sent them a message too.
Has anyone contacted Sony for a replacement console or have a phone number?
Any other thoughts on the best way to tackle this?
thanks!

Phone the PlayStation careline on 08705 99 88 77. I had my PS3 break (one day after my 360 died for the second time!), phoned up on Monday and had a new swap machine on my doorstep by Wednesday. Excellent service. I didn't have to package the machine up or include any cables. I literally just unplugged my PS3, gave it to the guy at the door and took the replacement off him and plugged it straight in using my existing cable set-up.
I say all this assuming it's still within the warranty period, which does seem the case from your post. It'll certainly be a lot less hassle going through Sony than having to fully package your PS3 up, take it to the post office, and wait for Amazon to receive, check, and send out a replacement.

What actually is the 'lights of death'? Never heard of that myself:idea:0 -
What actually is the 'lights of death'? Never heard of that myself
The PS3 and Xbox 360 (like quite a few devices) actually give "warning" lights if there's an internal problem or general hardware fault. I think on the PS3 a flashing red light is the "light of death" because it basically indicates a major internal fault that needs repair. On the 360 it's known as the (red) ring of death because the very serious fault is indicated by almost (3/4) a full ring of red lights on the console. So it's basically an internal diagnostic system to tell the user through the lights on the front that "I'm ****ed, I need to be repaired". The specific way the lights act tells you different things."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

The machine won't power on.
It bleeps 3 times while flashing the red light then it shuts down but the red light flashes continuously until you switch it off at the back.

FMW - unfortunately the machine is 15months old so it's outwith the 12month warranty from Amazon but i do know my sale of goods act and about reasonable lengths of time etc.
It means i now might have to argue with them to repair/swap it.
One of my colleagues contacted sony about a PS3 he bought at an auction. it was broken but he phoned sony and they replaced it with a refurbished unit.
I'll get the number off him on tuesday when I'm back at work.
thanks

Is it an original 60GB model? When my 60GB model broke in July, it was just in warranty. When I phoned about it, I asked out of curiosity how much it would have cost me had it been out of warranty, and he told me they were still changing launch machine for free, so you may be in luck still even now regarding a free repair or replacement.
Why wait for the number? It's probably the same one I've already posted.0 -
FMW
i phoned the number you posted and spoke to a very helpful indian sounding chap.
He asked a load of questions and then said that unfortunately it's out of warranty but as a gesture of goodwill they'll send me a replacement machine. It'll take a few weeks for them to return the game disc stuck inside but I'm getting a replacement machine and it's arranged for Tuesday.
Fantastic result.
Cheers for the number fmw.
EDIT : yes - mine is an original 60gb model and it'll be replaced with an identical model.
