Problem after downloading some software for survey

I have just finished an online survey with a reputable company and during the survey I was required to download a piece of software in order to be allowed to view a video.
I was able to access the relevant microsoft page telling me about the installation and it seemed easy enough for me to uninstall after, so I agreed to it...
After finishing the survey my aol connection crashed and is crashing regularly now and dies when I try to access some sites inc Ebay and Aol news, so as you can imagine I am peed off. My problem is this: I am now unable to find out the name of this software as when the connection crashed I lost all my history. I have searched the HD and have a list of all files modified today but nothing rings a bell.
Hopefully someone here will have some idea what I am looking for.
It was a piece of software by Microsoft, downloaded from the microsoft site.
It was used so I could view a video (an advert) without being able to, I presume, record it/save it in some way. There was a popup about disabling text copying (or something like that).
Please help me as I am loath to switch off the PC without getting rid of this .
Thanks,
MrsB.
Oh I remember it was downloaded by windows media player - does this help?

If it was an updated version of Windows Media Player then Windows should have set a System Restore point before starting the installation.
Try doing a System Restore to a point before you did the update and see if it fixes the problem.0 -
Hi fwor,
I have done a system restore and things seem ok, ebay is still a problem, but I can get to it through firefox so it must be an internet explorer thing. I am doing a system scan too in case there is something nasty there.
Last time I download anything for a survey  .
Thanks
MrsB.

this will reset Internet Explorer to it's default settings , probably some sort of browser add on
MORE INFORMATION
Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Internet Explorer 7 in Microsoft Windows Vista have many security enhancements that make Internet Explorer 7 less susceptible to spyware and to malware. Typically, badly written add-ons can affect the browsing experience in Internet Explorer 7. RIES enables Internet Explorer 7 to recover from such situations.
To use RIES in Internet Explorer 7, follow these steps:
1.Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
2.On the Advanced tab, click Reset.
3.In the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box, click Reset.
4.When Internet Explorer 7 finishes restoring the default settings, click Close, and then click OK two times.
5.Close Internet Explorer 7. The changes take effect the next time that you open Internet Explorer 7.
Note If you cannot start Internet Explorer 7 for some reason, use RIES from Internet Options in Control Panel.Ex forum ambassador

possible DNS problem as now having trouble accessing websites.
The video codec which you downloaded probably contained a virus which changes your DNS settings you may have a couple of entries starting 88.255.x.x
Using a Mac so not sure on how to check you DNS but may be worth a look
I have just had this problem on my wifes Mac so could be the root of the problem0
