    This makes interesting reading.

I have suffered dizzy spells for 4 years, however the last 14 months I have not had 1 day when I haven't been dizzy.
I was diagnosed with Menieres 2 years ago but then had it dismissed as I am only 29, and this only affects middle aged women. So now I have just been tagged with having Vertigo - cause unknown !!
My HR dept at work sent me to see a top notch shrink as they felt its psychological - The shrink agreed and sent me for counselling. The counsellor says there is nothing psychologically wrong with me.
I've been through all the depts at Burnley hospital - I am now about to start all over again at Preston !
I'm contemplating applying for DLA as somedays I physically have to crawl around the house because I can't stand with the dizziness.
I'll let you know how I get on

Good luck with your getting a proper diagnosis but i am afraid that the Doctor who told you it only affects middle aged women was wrong just like our original GP, i have just taken this from an NHS site hope it helps you...
Approximately 1 in 1,000 people develop Menière's disease. The condition can occur at any age, but most commonly affects people who are between 20-60 years of age (it is very rare for children to develop it). About 1 in 10 people may have inherited the condition, although having a relative with M!nière's disease, does not make you any more likely to develop it yourself.
My OH is only 23 and has suffered since he was 21, although they don't have a definative test that says yes you do definately have this there is a test that tells them it is more than likely this taking all symptoms into account. I cannot remember the name for it but it involves putting noise into each ear and looking at how the ear drum is affected by this. When my OH had this he was told immediately it was a positive result for Meniere's disease in his left ear and there was no need for any further tests.

As you said you have been to Burnley and are now going to Preston i presume you aren't too far away from Salford, that is where my OH is treated, it may be worth getting a referall there if you have no luck, his consultant has never doubted a young man having Meniere's disease.
  • I agree with KrisKross.......you are focussing too much on the diagnosis.
You need to illustrate how your OH symptoms and problems affect his day to day life, that is what they need to know and what they base decisions on.
After all different illnesses have different affects on people.
My son is autistic as I said earlier and that is a huge spectrum.....rather than concentrate on autism I explained in huge detail the problems faced by my son on a daily basis.
My friend was claiming for her son( also autistic) and didnt get it...when she rang up about it the advisor said she needed to show more of how his autism affected him as the people making the decisions don`t know about autism, you have to tell them every last detail.....and base it on the worst days he has.
Incidentally they will only give high rate care if the person needs a significant amount of help in the night.
Hope this is of use and good luck

Thats the thing though i didnt emphasise too much on the diagnosis i did explain everything it was the DLA people themselves that were stuck on the diagnosis and wouldn't accept that even if a person is given a label for their illness it doesn't mean it can't differ from that label. I will try and do it better this time obviously but i can't just say he has these symptoms and it does this to him without putting in the diagnosis as i have already told them in the previous claim. Thanks for the advise though.
