Fire baskets For Solid Fuel

I am not sure about this so might be a daft post.
If you get a fire basket can you just put wood on top of it and set it on fire??? I mean like a wood burning stove but not an actual stove???
If you can what exactly do you need??? I have seen some baskets as low as a £100 seem a lot cheaper than stoves.
