Hi
OH built an outside room (glorified brick shed..lol)which at the moment is used for storage and huge chest freezer etc. We want to move his computer and stuff out there as ATM it is taking over the bedroom and sick to the back teeth of all the clutter, discs etc. Driving me mad!!
Anways, it is all damp proofed and we are awaiting the inner walls being skimmed. Which would be the easiest and cheapest option to heat this extra room as it will need it with the computer stuff going out there? The freestanding room is about 12/15 feet away from the house. It is the size of a good sized lounge-but not sure of exact size but can OH if needed. We have GCH in the home but how would this be run to the shed IYWIM? It has a large DG window and DG patio doors. I know you can get those electric heaters but have heard they are very expensive to buy.
We are high electric users being indoors 24/7-Im disabled and OH my carer. There are 2 adults and 1 child. We pay £50pm electric and £8 gas.
Many Thanks

If it's possible to get a gas pipe out there then the cheapest option (to run) would be a balanced flue gas heater such as the Baxi Brazilia wall heater. These start around £150. The problem is the installation cost, they will need the gas pipe running out and a CORGI installer (£££). Bottled gas heaters or electric fires are cheaper to install but will cost a lot more to run.
It depends on your usage and how long you intend to stay there, whether you want to take the hit on the installation cost to get cheaper running costs.0 -
What about a small wood burning fire?
My Dad's just put one in, it's black cast iron with a glass door on the front and it's HOT HOT HOT!!! Cost's him next to nowt to run too
Cosy!!!!Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
Thanks for the replies.
My BIL is in the building trade and does loft conversions/extensions etc. He has suggested running a special pipe out and putting in a radiator which joins to our GCH indoors IYKWIM. Lucky that OH's uncle is Corgi registeredThe pipe will be about £55, but maybe able to get cheaper if I can find a 10% voucher for B&Q. He has loads of radiators knocking around, so the cost should just be the £45 for the pipe. This to me sounds quite reasonable-what do you guys think?
Thanks again.

It's feasible, but IMHO the pipes would have to be extremely well insulated to carry enough heat to an external building, and avoid sucking excessive heat from your existing system.
You would also have to make sure you have a frost stat fitted to the system, in case it gets cold enough to freeze the external pipework when the GCH is off - it will force the system to run to keep the external pipework from freezing up.
When we converted an external building similar to yours, the easiest thing for us was a storage heater on a timer, as we are on economy7 electricity - it works just fine.
By the way, you don't have to be corgi registered to work on the 'wet' side of GCH, i.e. anything external to the boiler.0 -
If your only going to be in there for a few hours a day what about a plug in halogen heater?2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040
