Taking a 6 year old to London

I thinking about taking my 6 year old on a trip to London on Friday (we've an inset day) and it's a very long time since I have ventured to the Capital.

Could anyone suggest places we could go? We'd be travelling down by train into St Pancras.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

thanks

  • There are quite a few threads about days out in London have a search but in short (and imo):

    Natural History Museum - Free
Science Museum - Free ( I recommend the Imax cinema ther but that's not free)
    London Eye - Quite dear

General milling about taking in the atmos. Walk from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace. Greenwich is nice but not very central.

You may be able to use your train ticket for 2 for 1 entry to some attractions, not sure which but have a quick sea\rch.

Dave trouseurs sugguestions are great IMO. Also I think the Imax is showing "fly me to the moon" 3d kids animation from Thursday. We went to a preview of it and it is great fun. We were given 3d sealed plastic glasses (not the paper ones). The 3d was so good, that all the children were trying to catch things throughout the film. Only on at selected cinemas I understand, so may be a good opportunity to see this film.
  • the doctor who exhibition was fab in the summer and natural hostory is good........tour bus around sights is great fun...hamleys toy shop and harrods toy dept are very nice..china town if u all enjoy chinese food...the parks are great the princee diana play park is lovely for kids

If you can spare the cash, London Eye is fantastic and kids love it.

The Imperial War Museum nearby is great too with a good park right by it with a good cafe. Again, really good for kids of that age.
  • If the weather is nice, I can recommend Coram's fields, it's about 20 minutes' walk for a six year old from St Pancras. It's free and there's lots of nice shops and caf!s nearby.

Another idea: the Princess Diana Memorial Playground and then a half mile walk to the science/natural history museum. All free again. The pirate ship is just perfect for six year olds.boat,ship.jpg

Recently took my four-year-old down to London for a couple of days, and davetrousers' suggestions pretty much cover what we did!

We also had a picnic on Hyde Park and saw the changing of the guards which DD1 was fascinated with! We peeped down Downing Street and there were some policement stood at the top, DD1 was craning her neck and got a big smile off one and couldn't stop talking about how he'd smiled at her because 'he knew she was being good' bless! :D
