Turning a single duvet into a dog bed Tips please?

Hi everyone

I have an old duvet that I was going to throw (it's dirty and I can't fit in it my washing machine)

Then I thought if I was to cut it in half and sewing the open bits up, I could then wash the 'duvet' easily and use it as a dogs bed which can be washed whenever needed. I'd put the 2 halves together in a folded up single duvet cover.

Can anyone think of a better way of doing it than this?

Thanks

A friend of ours made something very similar using up a single quilt, she purchased some material and press studs from the market, worked a treat, he was so comfortable it was an effort for him to get up to go out  :rotfl: :rotfl:

  • I've always been able to squeeze a single duvet into my washing machines ....
Seems a good idea though I'm sure the dog will be pleased.

I did a similar thing - I sewed four lines of thread down the middle - two lines close to each other - an inch gap and two lines again before I cut, and then cut along the inch gap - this way I didn't have to hold in loads of quilt fluff while I sewed, I had two lines of thread at the cut for strength and I ended up with two dog beds.

I've been doing this for years. Bought a cheap duvet from Matalan cut in half and sew up other half's seam - the other half doesn't need sewing as its cut on the seam. I use one at a time and one is always clean (in washing machine although I always clean filter after)for replacing and I don't stuff the duvet in cover just fold cover and place over duvet half in solid plastic bed, Every night I settle him in by shaking duvet half and cover to get rid of bits and creases!! We don't half spoil them don't we!!
  • could u wash the duvet in the bath ?... but if u did im not sure where that would leave he doggie

Sounds as if it'll work a treat! I've been doing something similar with the sleeping bags which we'd accumulated over the years and no longer need - (at our age friends no longer arrive to sleep on the floor!!!) - have a couple of unused single duvets now so as the sleeping bags get thrown I'll move onto these! And yes, we do spoil our dogs, don't we!!

I've done this using a single duvet and an old velvet curtain. For 2 dog beds I cut the duvet in half then folded each half in half. Whip stiched roughly round the open edges and sewed 3 lines across at intervals - a sort of quilting effect. The aim of doing this is to keep the whole thing flat. Covers made from old velvet curtain. Duvet in cover, cover sewed up. Result = 2 washable dog beds - no need to remove the cover, the inside doesn't bunch up when the whole thing is washed, dries quickly because the filling is the polyester in the duvet. And very hard-wearing - I'm on the second dog with the same beds!

I bought some pillows, pillow protectors and pillow cases, put a soft fleece blanket on top. I just bung them all in the wash. Very comfy too.. Dog loves them. Luckily she doesn't chew them!!! More expensive but saved me getting the sewing machine out..
  • Can anyone help me. I have been given 2 double duvets (summer togs) and I have 2 pairs of curtains that I am no longer using. My dog will have a birthday next month - can anyone direct me to a site that would show me how to make a dog bed (my little girl has had a leg op. so the bed has to be well cushioned but not to high).
    Hope someone can help.
