My mum and dad have got one of those fires and they are forever cleaning soot off too. I think it's just one of those things you have to do when you have got one of those fires.

I think they are just like that. We got our living flame fire last March, and every couple of weeks we have to clean the soot of the coals.

Would recommend having the fire properly serviced and the chimney swept too.

<edit> Just wanted to add, gas fires with a glass front to it are really bad for this. Air is drawn into the vents at the front of the fire to burn with the gas. Dust and dog hairs can clog these vent up and cause incomplete combustion and in time..... soot up the fire.
It is good practice to vac the front vents of the fire whilst cleaning.

Failing that.....It is important to have gas fires regularly serviced anyway.

if the soot is accumulating it means the flow of air/heat through the stones/pebbles isn't correct or something, if they have soot on they are placed wrongly. There are normally some instructions with ethe fire that detail how you should place them. it took me a few months(i.e. keep having to wait till they cool down to cool and move them) but on our fire now I get no soot accumulation on the pebbles. The majority was caused because I think I restricted too much of the flame at the front of the fire, now there is slightly more 'fire' coming out at the front of the pebble tray and rest goes through teh tray and out of further gaps. We moved the fire into another room earlier this year and had to resetup the tray and it happened again with the soot untl I sorted it so I think it is definitely related.
