Yeast For Breadmakers

Hi,
having excelled myself at buying my breadmaker yesterday and using all of my nectar points to save some cash I thought I would go to Tesco's today and buy some Yeast so I could give it a go. My local store only had Allison's dried yeast and it says on the packet DON'T USE IN BREADMAKERS so anyone got any ideas as to where I can buy the Yeast for my machine.
Would they sell it in Holland & Barratt do you think ? or could I buy it online from somewhere Any ideas would be helpful
I live in the Medway area of Kent.

Also while I'm here,I bought a slow-cooker as well yesterday can you tell me if there is a decent recipe book that I could look for that doesn't cost very much. The book that came with the machine doesn't give you many recipes. It is an oval machine so if I put a chicken in there could I cook it whole or how do i cook it.Sorry if I sound a bit dim but I don't want to muck me posh new gadget up
Thanks in advance

    Hiya, :)

Well, yeast is available in most stores and most of the yeasts there are suitable for BM's so the best I can suggest is to try a different shop when you can. H&B are usually more expensive than most.

As for slow cooker recipe books... we have one right here on Old Style! And the best thing is - if you get stuck you can pop back on here and ask the author for help - not to mention all the rest of us :)

The Slow Cooker Recipe Index is in our Indexed Collections which you can find in my signature any time you see it or...

..you can use the Indexed Collections link in the Blue Bar at the top of every page which looks something like this:-

Edit: From the link in the indexed collection to slow cookers you can also choose to join the thread and read it from the beginning, not forgetting that in the index we also have some books and websites listed.

Then there's more in the cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky!

Should keep you full of yummy meals for years and years :)

  • Hi,

My BM says not to use the non-easyblend yeast too - which appears to be what you have.

I use Hovis easyblend type most successfully in mine now, but I did for a long time use the type of yeast you have in a previous machine, and it worked well. Might be worth experimenting - you would only waste some flour/electricity? If you are not going to use the timer - it *might* work if you mixed your yeast into the water in the recipe? (Don't hold me to that!) I would add a small amount of vitamin C too - maybe part of a crushed tablet - the Hovis easyblend has Vit C in already - it is a "flour improver"

You should be able to buy easyblend yeast in supermarkets - I'm sure our Tesco sells it, certainly our Sainsbury does. Was this a corner shop Tesco?

    Hope that helps,

    Regards,

    White

    Hiya JackieO,

Firstly CONGRATS on the massive savings you made buying your gadgets yesterday :T

I asked a similar question about yeast not long ago and have since found that the hovis stuff in sachets in great. I got mine in ASDA at £0.51 for 6 sachets which depending on your loaf size can make up to 10 loaves-bargain.

I also got a lovely SC vege cook book from amazon that was 7.99. They might have some there for you, or the library or most importantly you should readtherecipe thread on here as thereis a massive section on SC's. I'm sorry I dont know how to link it for you but if some else reading this could do so?????

    Have fun,
    Al.

    Mortgage-free Glee!
I once had a horrid solid loaf..... it was the regular dried yeast that caused it!! I get tins at my local supermarkets, they both stock it...however, you have to be careful you choose the correct one as the packaging is similar, and the writing small...thats my excuse.!!

As for the slow cooker..... I love the recipes here, but as a first time user, I would try one from the book. Just to familiarize your self with it!

    Mah

Ps anyone want a tin of the ordinary dried yeast!!!

Yes it was one of their Metro stores. It used to be really good for things until it was 'modernised 'and now only sells the more upmarket higher priced goods. Very few value or lower priced stuff. I shall have to go into Chatham at one of their larger stores or even try Asdas, Sainsburys ect.
Where I live about 3 miles from Chatham, since the local Co-op closed it's doors Tesco has the monopoly of the shopping here as there is no competion. They soon realised how local people were dependant on the store and consequently 'modernised' it,
I shall have a look at my local second-hand book shop for a recipe book,or failing that drop large hints to my daughter's as Christmas is coming up. Thank everyone for your help
  • Hello JackieO

I use the Hovis dried yeast labelled “Fast Action Bread Yeast” and “Perfect for Bread Machines”. :p It does seem to be very good and always makes good bread. I have bought mine in Tescos and the Co-Op.

With regards to slow cooker recipes, I don’t have a book myself other than that which came with the machine but the following site is really good….. :D

    Hope this helps.

I have used "Tesco fast action dried yeast" with my Panasonic breadmaker for over a year without any problems. It's a bit cheaper than Hovis -worth a try!
  • Waitrose had several brands of easy blend yeast. The one I bought was 99p in and orange packet and although we've used the BM every day for a couple of weeks the packet looks like it's still full so I think it's going to last for ages!
