how much to mow lawn???

Hi

I know you are probably all great at doing your own garden but after much trying I have decided I hate gardening...

I want to hire a gardener to mow the lawn and spray strong weedkiller over the drive and patio. The other thing that has led to this is my strimmer broke in july, then after a month and a half of rain I finally had a dry weekend where I wasn't working or studying so decided to finally mow the forest that is my lawn........Yep the lawnmower broke!!

So instead of buying a new one I was wondering if anyone here knows a rough guide to how much it costs to get someone out to do it for me... I don't want to phne up and fall over with shock at how much it is generally I would rather be prepared.

Mel

The most important thing you have missed out is the size of your garden.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Where you are in the country makes some difference. But in my area the charges range from around £12 to £20 per hour, with most gardeners having a minimum one hour charge (although some have a two hour minimum).

There are exceptions, one of my new customers this year, was paying £75! As the gardener insisted on working a whole day. I have no idea what he did all day, as the garden isn't particulary big and is mostly lawn and takes me 2 hours max.

  • My gardener charges £25 to do whatever needs doing (a part from weeding grrr) and is usually here for 1.5 hours. My garden is 80 ft long at back and 35 ft long at front.

I was quoted a ridiculous £70 to cut my grass and I know the job takes 3 hours max because I saw the landlord do it with his household mower and I timed him. My landlord cuts the grass, but he's only done it once in a year and I don't like to phone him and ask him to do it because the weather's been so wet and changeable and I like to live uninterrupted.

Needless to say I didn't have it done.

My grassy area is an odd shape, so difficult to say how large it is, but probably 200 square feet, with direct and unhindered access to it from the parking bay.

    Thanks for the replies.

My garden isn't particularly big. But I would like them to do the weeds too, although I am planning on putting bark/stone in all the borders once they are cleared.

I think I will give a phone around next week as I would like it done before winter sets in.

  • Wow! those prices are extortionate if thats even spelt correct.

Im a college student and charge £5 an hour...usually in the hour i cut the grass and dispose of it and do a bit of weeding/planting. One garden i do is pretty big, i dont know how long but it takes about half hour to cut the back lawn every 2 weeks during summer.

See if you can find a decent student who will do some general gardening for 5-10 quid an hour. Cutting the grass isnt a hard job and if you dont worry about it being rolled and super thick then they will do it to the standard you want.

EDIT - Also, offer to pay for weedkiller. Sodium Clorate is 2 quid and will clear the majority of any brambles you have. So for lesser weeds they wont stand a bloody chance against it.

You may think so but dont forget a self employed gardener usually supplies their own equipment, pays insurance, tax and ni and has to cover their own holiday/sick pay etc.
