Don't take anything for granted once you get in - check the electrics/plumbing etc before switching anything on....

Sound advice here.

We hadn't anticipated needing to do this but that's part of buying a repo.

Hopefully you put in a offer low enough to take into account these extra little costs?

To the best of my knowledge there is no one site that shows all the repossessions that are for sale. I would be very dubious about giving money to any body claiming to have this info.

Repos are either sold via estate agents, check newspapers & websites, any property with a piece of A4 paper in the front window or tape over sinks/toilets is likely to be a repo.

OP if you need to check on which utility company supply the property, ring 08706 081524 for gas & 0845 6015972 for electric. State the address & they will till you who the provider is. But there is along way to go before you need those numbers.
thanks for these numbers i have put an offer in for a repossession and the gas number didnt have the property on there system.? is this number for a specific region?

the elec number was for a different area too but they gave me another number to call.

This is pretty much the case with all properties, not just repos. Obviously if someone is living in the property, it indicates that the utilities are ok but there's no real way of you checking short of running the tap yourself.

most repos have the services/gas/electrics disconnected or signs in the property saying: 'Do not use', so u cant physically turn the taps on and check before u buy.
Whoever was evicted from the house could possibly have left on a bad note, no way off telling what they could've done to the poroperty that isnt physically obvious without testing
we are buying a repo, when i last spoke to my solicitor, she won't let me sign anything though until we have tthe central heating/services and electrics checked out, because in homebuyers report they couldnt be tested... I spoke to BG and they said nothing is disconnected, just switched off... not spoken to my sollicitors again... will find out how we get it tested/connected for testing in the NY when they open...

You can do that when you buy it. Don't buy a repo if you expect to have checked services.
• Re dealing with creditors:

Somebody in the past at my flat obviously had debt - unpaid utilities, credit cards, etc. Every time a letter came, I would phone the number given, give the customer reference number and explain that they no longer lived there and I had no forwarding details.

This was never a problem and they'd stopped writing.

AOL was the only annoying one - I told them then they passed it on to debt collection anyway. But I phoned that company and they stopped the letters.

Important thing is to get your name on the electoral roll asap - otherwise any debts or frauds associated with the address may delay or cause problems for you when you purchase items. (Just had this, order cancelled without any reference to me because a previous tenant had defrauded that particular supplier)

Its against the law to open other peoples post and also for the companies to discuss their personnal details with you.

Put return to sender - not at this address on the letters and put them back in a post box.
