JSA: any advice?

I've just applied on the 'phone for JSA for the first time in my life. I have now got to go into the job centre for an interview. What does this entail?

Also, I've got my driving test in November, so I'm hoping to get a job then. Is it realistic to stay on JSA until then? The jobs I'm looking at all require a full driving licence. Obviously, I will continue to look for a job until I get one, but....

  • I think that the Jobcentre might get a bit iffy about your only wanting to do the sort of job that needs a driving licence when you don't actually have one! On the other hand, you might get away with it if it's only for a few weeks. I'd have a plan B ready in case you fail.
  • When you claim JSA, you make a Jobseeker Agreement. This list what you are capable of doing and has to be realistic.

Fine to list Driving ...when you have a driving licence.

In the meantime, expect to be asked to list something you are capable of doing now, and when you sign on, expect to be asked what steps you have been taking to find the jobs you are capable of doing.

You have to have "applied" for at least 3 jobs Per week and it has to be written in a little book which you take to them every week. The thing to look at with a driving job alot of places will want some driving experience so a brand new driver may not be what there after just something to think about. Also they will suggest jobs to you and expect you to ring up about them if you dont they start asking questions etc and can look to cease your claim.

:j well you will have to see a financial assesor then a personal advisor they will check your i.d do a work focused interview and get you to enter into a jobseekers agreement, nothing scary at all, who knows who might see me.

you can stay on jsa untill you find a job, as long as you prove that you are willing and are looking for work it will not be realistic to apply for driving jobs whist you have no licence.
  • Hi all.

There may be crossed wires here! I'm not looking for an actual driving job- I'm looking to get into property management which requires most staff to have there own transport/licence to attend the various sites. I am doing a course which will allow me to be qualified in this field.

Having a driving licence will make the whole job thing easier for me. I've not spent £100s on a course to end up doing something entirely irrelevant.
  • Fine to have ambitions, but JSA expects you to be available for work that you are able to do. This may not always be what you want to do.. but it earns you money !
