Placing Mirror on Internal Wall

Hi

Moved into a new build flat few weeks ago (5 years old) and am wanting to put a mirror up on the internal wall.

The wall seems pretty thin and hollow and the mirror is a wood mirror, 30" width and 42" height and not hugely heavy

Any advice on best procedure to put this on without damaging anything?

It probably has plasterboard walls, which are hollow. THe best type of fixing I have come across are a metal type. You drill a hole, put in the fixing and then tighten it. It expands behind the hollow wall and creates a solid bolt hole. You then unscrew the bolt you tightened and put it through you fixing and screw the bolt back in.

You have to be careful and make sure there is enough depth behind the wall to fit the fixing, so if it has cell blocks behind it a bit of work with a drill can sort that out.

THey do sell them at B+Q, about a fiver for ten. However, screwfix do them much much cheaper, so get them from there.

I am no expert so someone else may tell you a better way, but this works for me.

there are loads of different fixing s for plasterboard walls - in my expereince for anything heavy (mirror) I would only use the butterfly clips - like these:--

These are avilable at most good diy stores

Can I ask a related question?

I want to fix a very heavy mirror to a chimney breast above a fireplace. It is resting on the mantelpiece at the mo and I am worried about it falling off the wall if I use the wrong fixtures. I will have a baby crawling about soon and getting paranoid!

I was planning on just drilling into the brick and using masonry wallplugs - would that be the thing to do?

  • JoBoB- Yes thats fine 2" steel screw and use two a little way apart, but really heave use a small wall bolt. Picture frame only tend to use a picture hook (small nail into wall) and wire, There are a multitude of fixing available have a look at screwfix site and ask a hardware store.
