Do dog rocks really work ?

Having 3 !!!!!es my grass in slowly dissappearing..... as i feed them dry complete food i am loathe to put ketchup in their dinner, but was considering buying dog rocks....

Has anybody tried them and do they work ?

You mean sulphur rocks? Some people do claim success with these. However, it's worth checking what vets have to say about these. In my views, this is doing something unnatural to the digestive systems of dogs thus not worth risking. But I'll be open minded if these have been proven to be safe.

Meanwhile, my grass remains ruined. I have heard of the ketchup option, but I believe these contain salts.

Pure tomato juice is supposed to work but didnt with my male neutered dog but might be worth a try, sulpher rocks made no difference either, retraining is helping but we still have patches all over the place when he forgets, we have a system of replanting the patches which is a pain so any suggestions would be most welcome - best of luck to the OP with three of them!

I get very good reports about these and another product which has a similar effect (forget name but is in powder form). I dont have any grass at all so is not an issue for me ( I sold my lawnmower on Ebay 3 years ago to a chap who must have spent more in petrol coming to collect it; than he would have done had he bought a brand new one from a shop ). As far as I am aware they have no adverse impact upon gastrointestinal health and because they are a mineral supplement I would not expect them to do so.

They are expensive but they do seem to work.. My lawn is much better than before.

Having said that the rocks have to go into the dog's main water bowl for something like 10 hours before the water is suitably effected so if you have 3 dogs it may be better putting the rocks in a large jug and topping up the dogs water as if 3 thirsty dogs drink from the bowl and you top it up it will be a while before the water is ok.

They also don't work for the first month. They need to go in the main water bowl so if your dog drinks water anywhere else then there needs to be rocks in that water too.

When I go to my Parents my Mother puts some rocks into water the night before but when the dog comes to work with me or goes into kennels my grass suffers as he isn't drinking treated water...

To be honest I find them a pain and expensive, I am seriously thinking of re-training the dog to pee on a few sticks I have put in the ground...

Dog rocks are usually called rock sulpher which you can buy from most pet shops quite cheaply, the better quality dried dog foods also contain sulpher which I believe would do the same job.

We bought these a week ago and still haven't done anything with them. Oops. Really should as they were £10 for the packet.

Before I do rinse them down tomorrow and start using them, my cat uses the same water bowl as the dog. Is this okay?

My cats drink from the same water at the Greyhound and the blurb on the dog rocks pack says they are fine for cats..

I have just Googled Rock Sulphur and found a cheaper alternative though - anyone know anything about these? One I found is produced by a company called Shirleys and is in powder form..

I tried them and they didnt work, we ended up paving the garden, as the grass had turned to mud!

The nitrogen in your dog's urine is in the form of urea. This in NO way comes from his drinking water. It is a by-product of the animals kidney function and no rock on the planet will change that.
Please don't give your dog any of the anti-urine-burn supplements and mess with their kidney function.
