The hidden cost of banking with smile

Just take your debit card with you. Swipe the card when they tell you & the cash is instantly updated into your smile account. It uses the Link system so the cash is immediately available.
Paying in cheques via the Post Office is a bit more longwinded as you put them in the special envelopes & just get a receipt (for £0.00!) from the postie. Takes an extra day to reach your account (i.e. 4 rather than 3).
Also I have sent printed off smile statements to open an account with FD & for a credit card appeal with Lloyds & had no problem.Ethical moneysaver0 -
I find getting paper statments for my bank accounts is just annoying and a waste of paper. My main current account is with NatWest and when the statement arrives it hits the shredder unopened - Thats last weeks statement and I want to see todays online!
I've not had to produce printed statements for years now, payslips can prove salary. I'm finding now that people no longer ask for utility bills as proof of ID - I get those all online too.The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0 -
The day when the clearing cycle for 'bank to bank' cash transfers is abolished can't come soon enough.. When it does arrive it will mean that all bank accounts will be effectively linked wherever they are held by 'same day' payments. The concern with any current account is how readily you can both pay in and withdraw cash [Who wants to rely on cheques with their artificial 'cycle-that-is-not-a-cycle' or 'never-clearing-cycle'?].
[This would put me off smile currently rather than the unavailabilty of free postal statements].....under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -
Just for interest and sort of on topic for this thread...
I got my WHICH magazine through yesterday and it says than for the 5th year running Smile has been voted the best bank by its users. 91% of smile customers interviewed said they were 'very happy' with their account and the remaining 9% said they were 'happy' , no one rated it lower than that.

Surely it's no bad thing that a bank is saving money & resources by not sending out paper statements every month? They pay better rates of interest than most high street banks after all!0
