Cleaning for cat allergies

I'm having people to stay  - a bit last minute, but they have cat allergies. I'm round the house like a mad thing, vacuuming carpets, beds and furniture.

Never had to deal with this before. The cats have been given restricted access to only one room so they can't contaminate the others.

What else can I do? Should I wash down furniture fabric with something? Are there products I can use, eg sprays for furniture?

Any help gratefully accepted.

  • If they are paying you to stay in your home; clean like mad and go for gold:T

If they are not paying you; then simply just sit back and take stock of what you have already done to make their stay a comfortable one. They have to realise that this is your home and you have pets. If it bothers them; give them the telephone number to a local hotel.:j
  • Don't get me wrong - they are very appreciative of the offer to stay here. Because their visit is short, we want to spend as much time together as possible. They were originally making plans for b&b but I persuaded them to come here. They've increased their allergy medication in advance, so that should help.
I just want them to be as comfortable as possible, just as you would for any friends.

I have this problem! We have 3 cats and I seem to have a lot of friends who are allergic to them, which makes me feel bad when they come to my house.

Anyway, I generally vacuum and clean like mad and restrict the cats to the conservatory (they have a cat flap to the garden there).

They still suffer symptoms unfortunately, but I do the best I can.
  • Hi, I have two long haired cats and my close friend recently stayed with me and has a bad allergy to cats. I hoovered thoroughly and made sure the cats were well brushed before arrival. She was ok the whole weekend. I'd recommend hoovering twice a day while they are with you, it will make a big difference. Hope this helps. Tink x

  • Very difficult to remove any allergen like this to be honest. Cat hairs, pollen, dust are very fine and/light, so even when you think your home is free... the rest is history.
  • Sorry, forgot to say... wet wiping everywhere really helps. Use a microfibre cloth too.
  • I can't abide cats and am also allergic. However, most of my cat-loving friends don't ever seem to take this into consideration and will even let their cats walk all over any visitors! If I were going to visit you, I would be delighted at the effort, up the anti-histamines and enjoy the company of someone so considerate of my needs!
  • My mother is allergic to cats and we have 4 - yikes

I have used a product that you wipe on to the cat and it seemed to work.

Obviously you have to clean the house but it stops the cat odours or whatever it is getting into the air. I've done a search for it and found this link.

Don't know anything about the company selling it - just used the link to show you the product

    Good luck
