My first red chilli!

My chillis are finally turning red :j A few days of sunshine is all they needed.

I know I am a sad case to be so excited :o

  • Ooo nice :)

I've got one on my window sill. I had a crop of 4 chillis and then the plant started going yellow and no more chillis. I gave it some tomato feed and it's gone mental. I've got about 6 chillis coming through and 10 or so flowers now lol. Wish I'd dicovered the tomato feed earlier.

Well done Van! Don't forget that if you get more chillis than you can immediately use, just pop them whole in a plastic bag and freeze them. They'll keep up to two years like this. We're still eating frozen ones from 2006 and this year's are now cropping. Don't know why on earth I grew any this year. I grow the Hungarian Wax variety and they're so decorative I can't resist them.
  • Primrose ~ I have dozens and yes I will freeze them. Glad to hear they last so long! :j

I grew about ten plants, all different types and grown from seeds donated by lovely people on Allotments4all. These were for my son who loves his chillies. He is priceless, considering they are so easy to grow and I have to water them. Now he is saying "you can water too much you know". He found a red one today. Don't forget, fellow gardeners, to keep some of the seeds from the one you like the best if you are growing different types. I still have some of the decorative ones but they have been purple for ages.

thanks for that info, never realised they could be frozen. My mum bought me a chilli plant a few weeks back and it has lot and lots and lots of chillies on it, and we dont know what to make with them, have added them to pasta sauces and burgers, they certainly add taste

on a seperate note, i cut a chilli up the other day, then not long later I had a burning sensation round my nose, I think I must have touched my nose while cutting the chilli - just a little bit of salt does the trick and stops the burning:D

  • I didn't know about the salt trick, thanks hbj!

surfsister ~ it is best to freeze them whole. You can chop them up very easily even when they are frozen :)

  • Sugar also does the trick ;)

I have been freezing loads this year. But yesterday I picked 4 fatalli and 4 ripe Dorset nagas ( one of the hottest ) and put them into a litre bottle of vodka!.

Tried some tonight and its brilliant though not for the faint hearted as just breathing in the fumes made me cough and the burn, well its unbelievable but not in anyway horrible !
  • Well done! I've been wanting my peppers to go yellow/orange/red but have given up. Picked 'em green before they go mouldy.
