Hi All - Many thanks for all your kinds congrats and best wishes. Brilliant news and congratulations to notenoughcash and lillmissmup - fantastic - well done!:T :T :T :T :T :T :T :T :T
Sorry haven't been on since my original post, but as you all know I went to London to see Dirty Dancing - I had the time of my life; it was some kind of wonderful, didn't go into overload but had a wipeout!!! Just hope that you will love me tomorrow:D
Anyway less of that, a few asked for my story and how we managed to become debt free - not really exciting, but really became serious when last year I joined the Unnecessary Challenge and didn't buy anything unnecessary for the whole of lent. At the end of the month I had money in the bank and it felt really great. So from there on became addicted to saving money - only bought what was necessary, became a virtual recluse (only having the odd girlie night out now and then instead of every month). Hubby stayed in alot more - didn't go to pub to watch rugby, but watched in house instead with a few cans. Really just watched what we spent and lived a simple life, throwing as much as we could at the debt.
It did help that it was all on 0% so didn't have interest to contend with and after joining the MFW InvestorEd put the idea that it might be in people's interest to cash in their endowment policies and use the monies to pay off debts/mortgage. Looked into it and after months of deliberating cashed it in and used that money to pay off our final credit card, 5% (max allowance of overpayment on mortgage) and the rest into ISA's and savings. I know Martin would have said to put all the monies into savings and keep debt on credit card until 0% was up and maybe switch to another 0% and pay off eventually, but it was more important for us to pay it all off now and be officially debt free.
So that's my story - sorry not really exciting and didn't really know what our amount was when we had that lightbulb moment, but know that it has taken around 18 months, encashment of our endowment policy (which incidentally we were not relying on for our mortgage as changed to repayment years ago), and alot of determination and grit.
So thank you  to the op who started off the Unnecessary challenge (sorry can't remember your name off the top of my head - think if was CFCGirl) because without doing that challenge we wouldn't be where we are today and also thank you to everyone else  on this site who has given me the inspiration and belief that one day we would get there.
Good luck to everyone else, and please each and every one of you post on this site when it becomes your time.
Sorry for long thread, but I can talk for Wales once I get going.:D
PS How do I go onto the Roll of Honour? When you were born, you were crying and everyone around was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying! :rotfl:0 -

Just wanted to congratulate you as well. We became debt free in June of this year really by doing the same, had 8k of debt, become almost a hermit with the odd night out thrown in (I enjoyed them more because there were less of them), giving up the holidays was a big thing though but we did it, switiching credit cards to 0% really helped. Silly little things that helped were joining the library, saved a fortune on books. Going out with girls on the 2 for 1 offer saved a fortune as well. Thank you to everybody on this site as you have ALL helped in some way, lots of inspiration and well done to all of you on this thread who have just reached their debt free date!:j :j :j :j :j
