Got refused for credit card

hi,
I applied online for a credit card today and got refused from both Nationwide and RBS.
I cant understand why I would be refused!!!
I am homeowner in permanent full-time employment earning avg wages, never ever had any default/missed payments for mortgage, bank loans(x2) or car insurance repayments.

Has anybody any answers why??? Thanks..

Have you had a copy of your credit file? That may give you some answers as to why you were rejected.

I am in a similar situation applied for an Amazon card and a Cooperative bank visa, got refused for both. I am a homeowner (no mortgage), have full-time employment, no dependants and no loans/HP agreements.

Does anyone know of a card that I can sign up to, that doesn't normally refuse and that I can build up my credit rating on?

Capital One have such a card, one where you can build up your credit rating, but watch the interest rate, make sure you pay the full amount back at the end of the month.

I just had my application for this card accepted, just need to post back my details. This is the only credit card ive been accepted for, i had tried quite a few. Im 18 and work full time, currently in no debt, have no dependants, was actually suprised when they accepted! The interest rate is nearly 30%. I plan to use it to build up my credit rating then change once im able to get a better one. How long that will take i have no idea.

How about your own bank? In the absence of any credit history, they're surely the best people to approach for a card as they can see how you manage your finances.

I was once told by someone for works for a credit card company that sometimes the people who find it hardest to get credit are those with no credit history. So if you have had no loans or credit cards previously then you could be in this position. On the other hand it seems counter-intuitive but you can owe lots of people money but as long as you are managing your debts correctly (i.e 100% payment record) then it may be easier to get credit.

    Absolutely true.

Credit card providers like to see active accounts on your credit reference files and they consider you a much greater risk if you've no previous history of having a credit card, as you're effectively an unknown quantity.

My Dad had this problem a few years back, the only way around it was to take a card with a high APR and low limit - he built up a good credit history using this card and was eventually accepted for much better cards.
  • I agree with this fully. My OH had no credit history as I had all bills/DD's etc in my name as I was bigger earner (not anymore..lol) Anyways, he applied for the Capital One CC 29.9% and was given an initial credit limit of £1000 which i was quite surprised at.

    Good Luck

I have had credit/store cards in the past but recently cancelled my remaining store cards!

I tried to apply for a Capital One Bank CC tonight, but it came up with a website error message at the final stage (I hope that's not just another way of saying no)!
