How can I help my friend, she desperately needs to move.

I'll post as much as I can, hopefully I know enough about her situation to get some help. I'm going to go with her to the CAB as soon as I can.

Basically, my friend is desperate to move. The area she is in has a lot of bad memories for her, and she is now a few weeks sober and is struggling to not drink when surrounded by the people she used to drink with.

She doesn't work, and is on Income Support. She has never claimed IB or DLA, but I think she'd qualify.

She sees her GP for mental health problems and her GP has written a letter supporting her urgent need to leave her area and move closer to family.

The Housing team aren't being helpful. I'm not sure what they said - friend is a bit all over the place. It is a council flat she is in.

I've no experience of this. Who do I need to talk to and what do I need to do to get her moved asap?

  • If you "google" council house exchange quite a number of sites that might be of help, would also suggest a chat with her local mp who might be able to help.
Regarding DLA,if you think she might qualify then it might be worth getting the forms, but its not easy to get for mental health problems but not impossible, remember dla is about care and or mobility needs.
As for I/B can I assume she hasnt worked for sometime?that being the case she wont qualify for I/B but is probably already getting I/S on the basis of ill health
  • Thanks Woodbine. I get DLA for similar Mental Health problems, so I definitely get the forms and help her with them.

She has done some leafleting and newspaper stuff for exchanges, but I don't think she's done online.

To be honest, I doubt anyone would swap. She is in a one bed flat in the worst area in town. She was moved their in an emergency due to violent ex partner.

I'll look into the MP. I need to complain to him, so will kill two birds with one stone!

    Thank you for your help.
