The smart ones have been recommended elsewhere too, but are only as an 'additional' light by definition of those recommendees. You still need a better light for the front if you want to be able to see properly!

I use a couple of fixed Cateyes on the front of the bike and have a flashing LED as back up on the front. But the main illumination comes from my 3w Petzl Myo XP LED headlamp. Wherever my head goes so does the light.

Anyone tried Trustfire or Ultrafire? They use the Q5 cree LED setups and get good reviews on bike forums, just a bit dubious that they come from HK about 2/3weeks later!

    Cheap as chips too 8)

  • I bought kateye lights for my ds for doing his paper round. The batteries are still fine from last winter and the lights are quite bright. They are not a headlamp, to see where you are going but do make you visible to other road users. I only wish I could get him to wear somthing high viz as well. I pass a cyclist going up the hill at 5 am every morning and he has lights on his rucksack as well as his bike and is easily visible.
So what is the best headlamp for seeing where you are going? if I could see the low brigdes I could cycle along the canal all the way to work. But I don't want to hit my head and end up in the canal.

  • Thanks for all the advice. I bought some Smart LEDs for just over a tenner on ebay (inc. p&p). I don't think I really need a front lamp, as I cycle on quite well lit roads. The only place I cycle late at night is to my girlfriend's house and it's all on "major" roads.

I would try to find a quieter route along side streets. It is not pleasant riding along main roads. I would suggest a front light as well as you want to be as visible as possible and don't want cars pulling out in front of you. As a cyclist you need to ride defensively - it is no compensation that the you had right of way when you are competing with cars!

Hope vision twin LEDs? You must be a true night trail rider!?

Im just getting into MTB stuff myself, with a still shiny Q720, but have only only been out a couple of times so far, the rest of its use has been work commute!

I would second the Cateye recommendation. The LD610 rear light is only about £15 and apparently can be seen almost a kilometer away. Front light is where im struggling too though  as I want something that will light my path (so to speak), but not blind oncoming drivers and not cost too much! The hope series are serious lights, and have checked out AyUp, fenix, ultrafire and cateye plus probably a few I cant remember now!

Pew-pew, if you have any half decent recommendations for me too, i'd appreciate it :) but in the ethos of the MSE board make cost a criteria ;)

:o Sorry to highjack the thread!

Yes, I regularly go off-roading with my light on :) Its great fun, especially with a friend, although my mate almost knackered his Scott Genius the other night :)

I can only recommend the Hope lights. They're excellent, truly excellent. Expensive but once you try them out you'll not regret it. On full power they last a couple of hours, and you cannot look down the lens - its like looking at the sun - painful.

I have rethought my lighting situation and need to compromise the output for price. I reckon I will get a 100+ lumen torch and twofish adapter, and hopefully that will be better than just a normal bike light

    Any advice guys?
