Sorry Sam but it is NOT true that the policy holder has to be the main driver. I am with Direct Line, the insurance has ALWAYS been in my name. Our various cars have been registered in my name or my DH's name, and that has made no difference to DL. In fact my policy says that I am neither the owner nor the registered keeper of our current vehicle - of course as far as I'm concerned I own it jointly, but the car is registered in HIS name not mine.

Also earlier this year I advised DL that DH would now be the main driver because I was about to have surgery and would be unable to drive for an unspecified length of time afterwards. Even though I can drive again now, he's still the main driver because he does more miles than me, and I don't see that changing any time soon. With DL there was no problem. Just an admin charge for amending the policy.

I'm not saying that the OP will find it easy to get insurance, however they go about it, just pointing out that some companies WILL insure a car where the policy holder is NOT the main driver. After all, as my circumstances show, this can change throughout the course of a year.

I work for Privilege which come under the Direct Line umbrella, and the only occasion where we can insure a vehicle when the policy holder is not the the registered owner and keeper, is when its an insured and spouse/partner policy.

As has already been mentioned, I'm also not aware of any insurance companies that will insure a car for which the policyholder has no financial interest in.

  • Thanks Kruger.

There is a difference between insuring a car registered under a partners/sposes name. But when its a friend or someone you dont know! they wont do it. I have tried to do the same, and spend half a day looking into it a phoning people, only a few would do it and it was a at a huge cost (double what it was normally)
