what should i do....?

my friend has just bought a 6week old puppy (yes 6 weeks i know...) from what i think may be a puppy farm near kettering. They only paid £200 for what they have been told is a pedigree jack russell, the dog had fleas when they got it and the "breeder" just gave them some tins of adult dog food for it. Apparently it was on a farm although i do realise that just because it was on a farm does not necessarily mean it is a puppy farm. They also had rottie pups as well. It all sounds so dodgey too me, i would never get a puppy that young,expect a dog breeder to give me adult dog food or think it would fleas? Am i wrong to be concerned? Here is the ad.Do you think i should try and get the contact info and report them or am i being a busybody...

well, they arent 'proper' jack russells as far as pedigree goes - as in they do not meet the breed standard, which specifies minimum 50% white colouring - in fact they look a bit on the chunky side for JRT pups too, but hard to tell as there is nothing to scale them against in the photo. In a way that does not matter, but if they are being sold as pedigree JRTs then they should be.

The only pedigree dog we ever had was a pedigree JRT who was bought in the late sixties and lived for about 18 years, and he was the epitomy of jack russellness! (from old working stock and a cracking little terrier!) - to me these pups do not look ever so JRT but I could be wrong...

I would not buy a dog that looks like it is being kept in a little pen - the mum may well never get out of there. But I would never buy a dog from a breeder anyway when there are so many pups in rescue centres.

Shame your friend bought from these people but I dont know what you can do...

I'd pass the info to the RSPCA and leave it in their hands. At least then you've done your best for them, poor things!

Bleedin ell, what the hell is he doing buying a 6 week old pup? Surely the age of the poor little thing is enough to say no and turn away If it sounds too good to be true it normally is

At our rescue we get loads of puppy farm dogs, they come with heaps of behaviour problems and so do the pups.

When I bought my pedigree dobi the breeder gave me the pups pedigree certificate (she was registered thru Kennel Club)

Do all pedigree dogs need a certificate registered thru Kennel Club? Or is that just at breeder discregession? I know you need the pedigree certifiate if you wish to breed or show.

Was your friend given a certificate?

You can report them to the RSPCA but if the dogs are fed and have shelter and water, there won't be much they can do. Neither puppy farming nor backyard breeding is illegal.

AFAICS it doesn't actually call them pedigree, it just says they are jack russel pups. A pure bred pup is one that has both parents the same breed, a pedigree is essentially the same but it has to go back for x generations (I think it may be 6, but I am not sure). Other than that it doesn't matter if they are shockingly poor examples of their breed, or would be barely recogniseable from the breed standard :-(

The only other practical thing you can do is encourage your friend to get good insurance ASAP, in case they do turn out to be poorly bred. And also to emphasise to them the importance of getting the puppy well socialised as soon as they possibly can, especially with it having been taken from its mum at such a young age. :-(

ta guys, i feel very sorry for it poor thing, it was quiet and scared when i saw her. Do you even think its a pure jack russel and i didnt realise they could be that sandy coloured. plus it iant suprise suprise kc registered or had any jabs

a proper JRT cannot be sandy coloured, or 'cream' as they describe it. As I said in my first post the breed standard specifies a predominantly white coat (over 50% white)

does than mean its a cross bred? i wondered if it had some chiuahaha in it?

They shouldn't be sandy, they should be mostly white, but if they badly bred they can be almost solid colours.

it could well be a cross breed - put it this way they do not look like the offspring of two typical JRTs!
Nothing wrong with cross breeds of course but it should be sold as such. And not at six weeks.
I would imagine its probably not a chi x JRT as they seem to command a higher price so they would probably be selling it as this!
