Wireless

Ok... so I bought my new laptop :j

Sony Vaio very pretty and shiny... got Vista

Wireless networking...

Can someone help me. Do I need to be with a certain ISP to get wireless, or could I just get Router, connect it to my flatmates exiting broadband connection (thus FINALLY making the flat wireless) and off I go? Or would I need to install the pesky Virgin media rubbish that he has?? xx

you dont need to buy the router from virgin media, you can buy any wireless router as long as its for use with cable/virgin media and plug it in to the modem, set it up and away you go

You need the right type of router. Not all Virgin is cable, they supply ADSL as well in certain areas.

    Wireless USB Dongle http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132439/show_product_reviews

You don't need another router if you already have broadband. if you want to add wifi to a router use a wireless access point like the one above

  • Hello, can I hi-jack the thread with my really dumb, blonde question?...

Either you get virgin media cable or ADSL via a bt line. Telewest suggests the former?
Definately cable then, I have no phone line

internally you need to connect a cable/dsl router via ethernet not usb, so check the outputs on your modem
I will check the modem when I get home, then report back :D

  • Thanks guys... its broadband through Virigin that was in the flat when I moved in... flatmate is a bit strange and refusing to get wifi (meaning its gonna be harder for him to rent the room out when I move out but hey ho)

So going by this ( we also have a phone line but not sure who its through) I'd just get one of the wireless access points and off i went?

Silly question but how would I connect the access point to the existing internet connection?

ARGH I hate being a girly girl and knowing nothing of computers. xx

I have a free connection on my modem marked (very helpfully:D) ethernet. Do I just plug the wireless box-majig into that?
