    what does he drink?

is the water bowl near his food? most cats prefer their water to be well away from their food. i have two water bowls for my cats. one next to their food in the kitchen, and the other in the corner of my bathroom - they prefer the one in the bathroom without a doubt.

Are you feeding them wet or dry food? Its just that cats are desert animals and get a lot of their water from their food.

I have one cat who will drink from the water bowl but the other much prefers water from other sources and will quite happily drink from the loo or sink. He also likes to play with the water sometimes

So long as he is healthy and happy I wouldn't worry too much.

My cats will drink any water except tap water put down in a bowl. They drink from puddles, ponds and anywhere else they can!

my mums cat never liked water straight out of the tap......

she used to have to fill a plastic cup of water, leave it overnight then place it in the middle sink thing on the draining board and the cat drank out of that.....he wouldn't drink from anywhere else !

maybe it's the chlorine - my frogs water has to be left for 24 hours before I can give it to them so maybe the cat doesn't like the 'smell' - just a guess cos I haven't got a cat, sorry !

My dopey cat will only drink water as it is running from the tap for him he prefers to do it when he knows you are running a bath or attempting to brush your teeth. This is also an advantage to us as we can bath him at the same time when he needs it as he is not scared of the water as it runs.

  • Generally cats do not like tap water - it has far too many chemicals for their liking - I provide mineral water (usually the cheapest I can find at Asda or wherever). My cats seem to drink this quite well although I have had mixed reports from clients on the success of this tactic. Cats LOVE running water and a pet fountain can be very good - I advise these in cases of borderline urinary tract disease and recommend them to ALL overweight male neutered cats (high risk of FLUTD). Cats will find water in puddles outside (no sodding shortage there eh?) and mine will drink scuzzy pond water as well. Leaving a tap on drip can work but you will waste a disgraceful amount of clean drinking water in this way.

I soak the dry food in water before giving it to cat, but mine will drink tap water from a bowl (next to the food) anyway, I soak the food incase the biscuits are too hard, seems to prefer the soaked version.

    Try rain water Rob.
