Anybody ever heard of cats eating compost?

:confused::confused:Anybody ever heard of cats eating compost?

We've got a family of cats round our way who are a bit of a nuisance getting into everyones bins and scavenging - you definitely never leave any food to cool out on the side prior to freezing if there's a window open anywhere! (I thought an apple and blackberry pie would be safe - I was wrong!)

Recently one of them dragged a medium sized bag of cat crunchies out of my pantry into the garden and proceeded to claw and bite at it to get it open.

This week they have ripped open the bags of compost I bought to put on the veg beds and they scoop some up on their paws and eat it!

I've never seen anything like it - and given that compost can be created out of waste is this a viable cat feeding option? ;):D

Ok mainly I just wanted to see if anybody else had ever seen anything like it cos it really freaked me out! :o:D

Hi Jacks, we have 6 cats remaining(how I hate typing 6 and not 7) and one of ours(my avatar as it happens) likes the odd bit of compost:eek: He is VERY picky though mind you:rotfl: He likes B&Q compost NOT hte stuff from the local garden centre:confused: and most certainly NOT our lovely rich loamy home made compost!(mind you this the same idiot that loves dirty smelly puddle water and pond water despite us having 8 clean water bowls (changed twice a day) arround the house. Cats eh?

Ooh he's gorgeous Annie - he looks like a real personality! It's funny that he only fancies some types of compost and not others!

Do you think compost is full of insects, or nutrients or what?

My cat likes tea and blueberry muffins apparently, but that's as unconventional as he gets

I put some tea and a muffin on the side table ready to settle down with a book but the washing machine finished so I thought I'd better hang it all up so that i could veg out guilt free. :D

When I came back all that remained was the paper wrapper caught on his one remaining canine tooth and he was going "Gnar Gnar Gnar" trying to get it off! Cheeky monkey!

All of ours love muffins(ASDA a GREAT fave!) and they will occasionally do me the HUGE favour of eating my home amde ones as well. Most of them love the juice from Baked beans, red pesto (NOT green though!)
BUT..............they ALL adore homemade Christmas cake and all of the soups I make. However the biggest most adored "special thing in the entire world are COSTCO mince pies. Chaos here when we have them beauties...mind you htey ARE the best food in hte world so maybe they aren't completly loopy!!!!!!!!
    I could go on and on..but I won't:rotfl:
Your avatar is STUNNING. Please give him a LARGE hug from me.

My old cat used to love pancakes and cakes, think it was the diary in them, he never touched anything else...I couldn't understand it the first time it happened, lived on my own and four pancakes in the bag form the baker turned into one....

  • I have an orchid that I have to keep shut away from the cats after finding tell-tale trails of bark on the carpet and craters in the pot.

Caught my ginger nearly-six-month-old chewing on a lump of bark today

  • My cats eat all sorts of things, I have one cat who loves raw veg and will run off with green beans, cauliflower etc, I have another one that just loves marshmallows, if we ever have them in the house she goes crazy till she gets one. One of the boys we have has a real thing about trying to drink your wine and one of the kittens we have is obsessed with bread, so much that she can open the bread bin and pull out the loaf ! Oh and mustn't forget Lucy who will bite your hand off for a polo.
  • my dog likes to stick her face into the bag of compost when I am putting plants out into the garden, always having to chase her as she sneaks up and you hear the rustle, the head pops out and her beard is covered, I swear she eats it.....very odd behaviour!

I know what you mean - I've had my fair share of orchids destroyed too by my little toad!

    Hi,

You are not alone, my cats will eat all sorts of strange things, one of them goes mad for grass, the other likes baked beans and rice pudding! My Mum had a cat who was partial to cake, sponge cake in particular!

Blimey there are a lot of weird and wonderful quirky moggies out there! :D

Eating compost pales into insignificance compared to orchid bark, green beans, and polos!

I quite understand the urge to eat mince pies (what is it about Costco cakes in general???They are the best bakery anywhere!) cakes and marshmallows and drinking wine - that makes perfect sense to me! :D

It's not very "cat like" though is it? I think we must have corrupted them with our wine drinking mince pie eating ways! ! ;)

I don't mind them being odd so long as they're happy and healthy though huh? That's the main thing.
