Physical Memory problems?? Computer very slow despite having 4GB of RAM!

Options
Hey All,

I've got the DELL XPS M1730 - 2.4ghz and 4GB of ram however my computer has gone SO SLOW!

Does this look right to you? look at the physical memory and the amount of memory IE takes up and how much free physical memory I have (which sometimes drops to 0)

[NOTE: All i had open when during the screenprints above was Internet Explorer and MSN!]

Internet Explorer is taking up 450 MB of RAM, which sounds very high; I don't know if that's actually the case though. Firefox on my Mac is using 100 MB of RAM with two tabs open, so almost 5 times that seems a lot (I know it's a different browser and OS though).

You also have rather more than just Internet Explorer and MSN open. Among other things, you also have Acrobat Reader, Google Desktop, lots of Logitech stuff, Window Defender, Paint, Paint Shop Pro, CyberLink, and SpyBot's TeaTimer.

You're not running the active scanner parts of both Windows Defender and Spybot S&D (this is 'TeaTimer') at the same time are you? You should never run more than one anti-spyware active component at the same time, as they will always argue and slow your machine right down. If you are, choose one to run all the time, and turn the other active scanner off, just use it for regular manual scans, and see if it makes a difference.

  • Kill it and start again. Is that up time in hours? Windows needs the occasional reboot imo. If you want to leave your PC on forever install Linux. Try using Google's Chrome for better memory management. Check no other apps are slowing you up - Google Desktop indexing and my A/V are normally my probs!
  • How many tabs in IE do you have open?

When I've been browsing for a while and have about 4 or 5 tabs open (maybe a couple more) mine tends to not go above 180 MiB. That's IE7 on XP Pro with 2 GiB or RAM in a quite old PC.

install firefox or chrome, and see what difference it makes.
your IE memory usage seems very high.

just checked my firefox memory usage and it shows up as 91737k.
