browse the web. watch video on a bigger screen. check emails, download and run extra apps/games
loads of stuff. lovely bits of kit as long as you dont mind having to use itunes.0 -
Serious question: if you don't know what it does, why do you want one?0

Just a few things I can't make out from the overview on apple.com:
Is it practical to hook it up to a monitor or LCD TV? Does it come with the same "multi-touch" featureas as the iPhone and Macbook Pro? Does it come with a decent word processor and/or can you run MSWord for Mac? Has anyone encountered any compatibilty issues?

its an iphone without the phone features.
decent word processor? youre using a touchscreen!
you cant hook up a bluetooth keyboard to it, which (for me) is a major downer.
msword? no.
its an ipod. not a fully functioning osx computer. theres text editors, but dont expect anything too advanced.

I'm sorry my post didn't meet with your approval, but I was actually trying to help.
My post was 100% in keeping with the spirit of MSE; if you don't know what it does, why would you want to spend money on it?
To answer the rest of your questions:Is it practical to hook it up to a monitor or LCD TV?
Yes.Does it come with the same "multi-touch" featureas as the iPhone and Macbook Pro?
As pointed out, it's just an iPhone without the phone.Does it come with a decent word processor and/or can you run MSWord for Mac?
No. It's made by Apple, but it's not a Mac.Has anyone encountered any compatibilty issues?
Compatibility issues with what?
I trust this post satisfies where my last did not.0 -
Yes it does, well done.
I understand that it's not a little macbook and that's why I'm wondering about its limits. If I can browse the internet and download/play movies etc, I'd like to know if it supports certain things, SKYPE for example. I realise it's unlikely, but it does, of course, have an operating system!

Safari is a full web browser (apart from Flash of course), so you'll have no problems browsing the internet. It's pretty speedy and doesn't take too long to get used to the small screen. Zooming in an out using the touch gestures feels quite intuitive.
Movies that will play on a regular iPod will also play on the Touch, so you can download them from iTunes, or convert them yourself. It has no microphone, and as far as I know, there's no Skype support. The new Touch has a microphone input (along with a speaker and hardware volume controls), and Apple will be selling earphones with a built-in microphone. If Skype does make an appearance, it's doubtful it would be compatible with the 1st Gen Touches (which is what I presume you're looking at the refurb store).0
