Help mending my husbands guitar

Hi all,
I am in so much trouble, I was playing with my daughter yesterday and we managed to knock over my husbands precious guitar, it fell and hit the corner of the fireplace and now the top of it has cracked very severley. I need to get it repaired somehow and was wondering if anyone knows anywhere that does this kind of thing? and how much will it set me back?!
The guitar was a gift for his 30th and has been engraved and everything so it is irreplacable! Please help!!

It might depend on the make and value. A local music shop could well have a person (either in-house or someone that they use) that could do this but if it is an expensive guitar then in order for a proper repair and not to reduce the value then I think it may well need to go back to the manufacturers if possible.

If it's a decent guitar, please tell me its insured. Even if not a really expensive one, do you have accidental damage cover on your house contents insurance that would cover this?
  • Type of guitar (acoustic/electric) and the nature of the damage (do you mean the damage to the bit above the neck or the face of the guitar?) will all have a bearing. E.g. an electric guitar is usually a lot easier to repair

A decent guitar shop will probably have a luthier, or could put you in touch with one. However, as Incapuppy points out, it may be best to contact the manufacturer if it is a very valuable guitar. If a shop recommends someone then question him/her about whether they have expeerience with similar guitar repairs.
  • thanks for your replies, i dont think its very valuable its just sentimental value, and its not insured. It is an acoustic guitar and the damage is on the very top part, where the strings are tightened (Im sorry i dont know what that part is called) its has cracked and bent forward.

In which case Emma, your best bet would probably to have a phone around a few local music shops (if you have any) and see what they say.
  • I don't want to depress you but I did this to my OHs acoustic guitar earlier this year.I knocked it off its stand when hoovering. The damage sounds pretty much the same actually and I was told it could'nt be repaired.I would still try though you never know.If you get in touch with the manufacturer they may be able to replace the whole neck bit of it.I found it easier just to replace the whole thing but then again OHs guitar unlike yours did'nt have any sentimental value.

Tbh, it sounds as if the repair might cost more than the guitar is possibly worth, however, if something had sentimental value to me then cost wouldn't be so much of an issue. I hope you get it sorted out Emma.

First thing to do is slacken the strings off NOW, unwind them or the tension might make it worse. Probably past repair as the sound will be effected by adding extra strength.....
