Train companies not allowing advance bookings online???!!

Hi all,

For the last couple of days I've been trying to book advance tickets for a return train trip to Bournemouth leaving this Friday (26th) like I have on many occasions. No matter what train company I use online, it wont give me the option to book advance singles for the cheaper rate. I've tried a whole bunch of different train times for that day, and even 2 months in advance but the options still dont seem to come up!! Feel free to try yourselves at let me know what happens!

Never had this problem before. Often booked 1 day in advance and still had the options available. Anyone know whats going on? Is this the rail companies way of getting us to pay a bit more money by temporarily disabling advance bookings??! Really annoying whatever it is...

Hope to hear your ideas soon ;)
Jin

The new "simplified" rail fares system isn't quite as simple as the train companies would like make out.
Even though they say there is now only one "advance" type of ticket, there are different fares attached to the same name.

In your case, it may be that the advance fares from your home to Bournemouth are shown as £5, £10, and £15. At this relatively late stage it may be that all the £5 and £10 tickets allocated to the trains you wish to travel on, have been sold. So the only one left for you to buy is £15. If you look at the same journey for a months time you will doubtless find all the fares available.

Last week my wife went to London. There were no £5.95 tickets left, so she had to pay £11.90. Likewise coming back, there were no £5.95 tickets - BUT a First Class advance single was still available at £10.55 - £1.35 cheaper than Standard Class !

It would be handy if we knew where you were travelling from...

And the day before travel is a bit late for advance tickets really to be honest.
  • It's probably because there are engineering works on the line on one of the dates you are traveling. I'd phone the train company or national railway enquiries to check.

  • bookings tend to close anything from 12:00pm to 21:00 the day before travel.
