Both parents needs IB but is this better

Hi

My dad is registered as my mam's carer but now needs to claim IB himself. He's been trying to hold out for a few years but it is now apparent that he will not be able to work again. My sister has offered to become the carer but my dad is worried about claiming IB. He thinks that if both he and my mam both claim IB they will lose out because they will have to pay full rent, council tax, prescriptions etc. Can anybody offer any advice wether they will be better off both claiming

thanks

  • Someone will correct me if i`m wrong but i assume your mum gets dla as well as I/B?this being the case then if he wasnt working they could claim I/S as a couple, and if your dad continued as the carer they would get the £27 a week premium on I/S,they would get the couple rate of I/S plus any premiums and they would get full council tax and rent rebate etc

Unless your mum and dad have been working for the last few years then they will not be entitled to IB as it depends if you have paid enough National Insurance in the last couple of tax years.

If they can't claim IB then they will need to claim IS. As you don't get to pick which one you claim.

This is a case where it would be worth getting advice from a welfare advisor - your council should have welfare officers, if not try CAB or DIAL.

They will look at which benefits you are entitled to - and which would be best for you to claim.
