Protective parent and Lloyds TSB

For the past 2 years my daughter has had an under19's account with Lloyds TSB - into which we have paid an allowance and she has put her sunday job salary. last week (due to a persuasive photo session sales person on the phone) she was went into the red for the first time, by £37 and now has had a letter about unathorised overdrafts and charges etc etc (this from the company telling her she now had a student account - not applicable as she is having a gap year) I am fuming both with her naivety re photo session but also with Lloyds and their 'one mistake and you're out' - or at least 'hit with major charges', attitude. Me and her dad have our current a/c and a minor savings account with them, in and out of which flow thousands each month. Do you think I will be an idiot if I go storming in tomorrow, to them (with daughter) threatening them with closure of not only her account but also our accounts. I am SO annoyed !

Errmmm.... yes, I do think you'd be an idiot
First off, the person you speak to almost certainly will not have sent the letter and will have no idea what you're so cross about.
Secondly - the letter wasn't even generated by a person, let alone a person who looked at her previous good conduct.
If you "storm in tomorrow" you are just going to get their backs up. And ... if they have any "discretion" or "goodwill" to dish out, it ain't gonna go your way.
Far better that you go in there calmly. Explain the situation. Remind them - nicely - of her previous conduct. Assure them that she's learned her lesson and ask - would you consider waiving the charges in this instance, even though we appreciate that you have the right to impose the charges under the T&Cs of the account.
Better still, get daughter to do this, but go along with her for moral support
Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac

Blame the daughter. I am sorry but your daughter should clearly know what would happen if she goes overdrawn without an arranged overdraft.
The bank charges are there for a reason, the banks need to make money.
You say you go in their fuming etc.etc. get over it, its your daughters fault for listening to stupid people on the phone and paying them money.
Simple as.
However, if you are polite you can explain it was a one off and they will more than likely refund the charge. However, if it happens again, they will not.0 -
. . . threatening them with closure of not only her account but also our accounts. I am SO annoyed !
Threats of this kind wouldn't work in getting them to withdraw the charge.
It might make you feel better, but you would probably suffer more than they will - like the inconvenience of having to change standing orders, all your direct debits, salary payments and so on.0 -
ive just had an issue with a charge from lloyds, annoyed the heck out of me
theyve twice inncorrectly charged me and i've had to run around and sort their mistake, what annoyed me was their attitude, over the phone were useless and one branch, spoke to the branch manager of the one near work today, explained calmly i know it was wrong for me to go over and i admit my mistake but i didnt think it was fair for them to charge me £30 when ive had to run around after them and i've had nothing for my troubles etc and i wanted to close my acc's with them,
he looked at my acc and asked if he refunded the charges would i keep the account.
what ive learned, stay calm and if you have a logical reason why they shouldnt charge you they might waive itYes Your Dukeiness

£37 is a small price to pay for your daughter to learn an important lesson about life and banking. Don't try to protect her from this!0

Reading through this I think you are right, We have an app this afternoon and I will go along, with her and get her to point out she has never been overdrawn and this was an oversight, can they waiver the charges as this was a one off event - it is true that this is a lesson learnt - never give out any bank details unless you know what you are paying for and if you go overdrawn go straight to the bank and explain the situation nicely and don't stick your head in the sand !!
Thanks to you all .... and 24 hrs on I am a lot calmer about this ! (and no doubt she will be somewhat poorer !0 -
Haha good luck

Well.... have had the meeting with a very cheerful -but serious at the same time - man from the bank, daughter did all the talking about the reasons why and never done it before etc etc. He gave her a nice but firm lecture. They are waiving some of the charges as goodwill gesture (to be confirmed by manager and will await call tomorrow). I think it stands as a good lesson in money management for the future, and also that the people in the branch aren't faceless nonentities - and that she has to open and READ her mail from the bank ! Then she drove me home (having just passed test) and scared me witless :eek:0

Haha I am not allowed to drive my mum because I scare her
