Remote desktop from Vista to XP

I've got two laptops, one using Vista and one using XP.
I've set up file sharing between the two laptops and it's working fine, but I can't open a remote desktop session from my new Vista laptop to the XP one.
The settings on the XP machine appear to allow remote connections, but when I type the name of the XP laptop into the RDP connection box it can't find it.
I can't ping the XP machine from the Vista machine either, which must be significant.
Any suggestions, please?

The first guess would be that each is in a different subnet. Have you checked whether either or both has a manually-assigned IP address, and if so, whether the subnet mask is the same?
Even if they are both automatically assigned via DHCP, I think you can still get problems of this type if you have two devices (e.g. a wirelsss router and a separate broadband modem) that are both running DHCP servers and issuing IP addresses in different ranges at the same time.0 -
If it is true remote access( ie via internet) you are after try https://www.logmein.com
they have a free option and its dammed easy peasyclick here to achieve nothing!0 -
I use UltraVNC to control some PCs on my home network http://www.uvnc.com/ you need to run the server (set it to start with Windoze) on the the remote machine and viewer on the local one.
Say the Vista machine is in the front room and you want to control the bedroom XP machine load Uvnc onto both. Then make sure the server prog is running on the XP machine and setup to automatically allow connections with a password ( sorry cant remember the details) then from the vista machine start the viewer and put the details into the VNC server Box "bedroomXP:0" note you need to use a colon : and Zero 0 after the name. under quick options make sure that Auto is selected, then press Connect enter the password - a new screen will start and you should now have control of the other machine. NB Uvnc will not display the wall paper and will/may have trouble displaying goggle stuff on the desktop.
You need the faster machine to be the viewer when ever possible.
logmein is very good across the internet
