cycling with a 10mth old-help!

I really fancy getting a bike with a child seat on the back but I don't know the first thing about which bike or child seat to get! I have loked at amazon for a useful book that might be able to help but no luck! I have also been to Halfords but they were most unhelpful and I don't want to be talked into buying something I don't need. Can anyone offer any advice?

do you have any smaller bike shops who may be able to help? try yellow pages or somewhere to give you local bike shops...might be worth a try.

other than that...try halfords on a different day? or, go and see what makes of child-bike-seats they have on sale, take note of the names, and google them when you get home

PS did you get a frame baby carrier sorted in the end??

I bought a child cycle seat for our DD and she loved it. If you've aready got a bike then they are quite suitable, if not just buy a bike and fit a seat on the back.

    Hi

We have 3 children and we have cycled with all of them. We had a basic seat to begin with but then got a snazzier one that had leg supports and reclined although I dont think that is absolutely neccesary. The one thing we loved was the trailer! Much easier to ride too as the weight balance isnt changed and you have space to put all the luggage a baby brings with it! We got ours from a specialist cycle shop but I see Argos have them now too.

When they were old enough to sit on a bike seat proper we got a tagalong bike which attaches to your bike at the rear and it only has one wheel. That was fab too but you are awhile off that one yet!

    Enjoy it anyway!

Isn't 10 months a bit young to put a baby on a bicycle? Shake the poor mite to bits the state roads are in.

Nah.. you wouldn't exactly ride Le tour de France...

Just a basic seat with a proper back reck, straps for the feet (you wouldn't want to get kicked all the time) and secure straps for babe and on you go.
    My kids just loved it.

We are now at the stage when 2 can cycle but littly can't and he is too big for the bike seat...

  • i have had my son on the back of my bike, what a godsend it is as i dont drive! i purchased my seat from argos about £20 to £30 i think. sometimes now the weather is a bit cold i still put him on the back and hes 5... i am a confident biker so i spose that helps.he can start biking again when the weather is better.. tbh a seat on the back is invaluable

There are lots of useful links here, including at least one about cycling with children.

The ones which always scare me are the little trailers you put behind the bike with a child in, even when they have a flag attached I worry that someone's going to hit the trailer! I don't like the look of those 'lie-back' bikes for the same reason!

  • Wow! thank you everyone for your replies!! I have much to ponder including the Argos catalogue and the yellow pages.
And yes Holstar I did get a frame carrier and am using it lots! There are some lovely coastal walks around here that we can now all enjoy!
